Engleder captures gold in Rio, her final Games

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Barbara Engleder won the 50m rifle 3 position gold medal at the Rio Games on Thursday, Germany's first ever gold in Olympic women's shooting.

The 33-year-old Engleder ranked at or near the top through the kneeling, prone and standing positions of the competition, holding off two Chinese shooters.

Du, gold medallist at London 2012, also joins Poland's Renata Mauer-Rozanska with a record two Olympic medals in this event.

Engleder dominated the final, topping the leaderboard after every round but one in a steely performance that could have been filled with nerves following disappointment at three previous Olympic Games.

Engleder had a long, successful career, supported by her service as a sports soldier in the German military.

Her final shot was a disappointing 9.0 to Zhang's 10.4 but, when she realised she had won, she dropped to her knees in disbelief.

She missed her mark by firing an 8.6 to miss out on the chance for gold, earning her second bronze medal of Rio, as she placed in 10m air rifle as well.

"That means so much to me because I'm quitting after that right now".

"I didn't want to finish my last Olympics with that score, but I couldn't help it", Du said through an interpreter.

Asked what she'll be doing next, Engleder responded: "Drinking a beer". "Future plans, I do not know", said Du.

Highlights from Tuesday in Rio that sent Team USA so far ahead of the other countries included Michael Phelps' historic 20th and 21st gold medals; he won in both the 200 meter butterfly and the 4 x 200 relay.
