German minister says talks on EU-US trade deal have 'failed'

Germany's Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel told reporters that the talks had failed to make progress on any of the major sections of the long-running negotiations over the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP.

His comments were welcomed by Brexit supporters who believe it will pave the way for UK-US trade talks.

One of the reasons given for the breakdown in negotiations was that "we Europeans did not want to subject ourselves to American demands", Gabriel said.

Gabriel accused Washington of being "angry" about the deal that the European Union struck with Canada, known as CETA, because it contains elements the US doesn't want to see in the TTIP.

"If we organise Brexit in the wrong way, then we'll be in deep trouble, so now we need to make sure that we don't allow Britain to keep the nice things, so to speak, related to Europe while taking no responsibility", Gabriel said.

Germany's Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel confirmed that the negotiations between the parties had failed, but he said that "nobody is really admitting it".

At a town hall event, Mr Gabriel also reportedly warned that the European Union could face difficulties if it mishandled the process of Brexit.

And he said that just as Brexiteers mobilised a "people's army", so too can Mr Trump in the United States. She has no sense of markets and such bad judgement.

Sigmar Gabriel said the European Union would go "down the drain" if other states followed Britain's lead and that the United Kingdom could not keep the "nice things" about Europe while taking no responsibility.

Tory MEP Daniel Hannan tweeted: "Confirmation that US-EU trade talks "have failed".

Barack Obama had warned Britain would be "back of the queue" for any new trade deal as TTIP was the priority.

The prospect of Ttip failing could also be welcomed on the Left of British politics, as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been a prominent critic of the proposed deal.

Talks aimed at setting up a U.S.

French President Francois Hollande has objected to plans to open up Europe's farming and film markets to more USA competition, while protesters in Germany have claimed the deal would undermine labour and environmental standards.
