The virus poses a risk to pregnant women and has been linked to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly in Brazil, and to auto-immune disorder Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can cause paralysis.

Since the Zika outbreak began a year ago in Brazil, thousands of babies whose mothers were infected with Zika early in pregnancy have been born with a devastating birth defect known as microcephaly, in which the head and brain are abnormally small.

Earlier this July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported for the first time that a woman from New York City had likely given Zika to her male sexual partner after having sex without a condom (she was originally infected during travel to a Zika-prevalent area of the world). Zika can be spread via sexual transmission. However, due to their proximity to Florida and because of other epidemiological linkage to Zika, donations in Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, and Texas, should begin testing within the next four weeks. Other recommendations are to use pathogen-reduction devices, or halt blood collection and obtain whole blood and blood components from areas of the US without active virus transmission - but that was back in February.

The historic case came to the attention of the Maryland Department of Health in June. Additionally, in the last few weeks, there have been 42 cases of the virus contracted in Florida. "To date, there are approximately 60 other travel-related Zika cases throughout Georgia and no evidence of local transmission". For this reason, people traveling to countries with Zika should avoid mosquito bites for 10 days after they return.

Matilda hospital reported Thursday that the patient's urine and blood samples tested positive for the Zika virus, and that she has been transported to the United Christian Hospital for quarantine, CHP said.

State officials are preparing to respond if there are any signs the Zika virus is being transmitted in CT. This is especially critical for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive and their partners.

"Testing of donated blood is already underway in Florida and Puerto Rico, as well as in other areas, and it has shown to be beneficial in identifying donations infected with Zika virus", said the FDA statement.

The new recommendations will stay in place until the threat of Zika transmission is reduced, the agency added.
