Tropical depression headed to North Carolina

The long range outlook of TD 9 is for it to eventually curve northeastward in the Gulf of Mexico and move back toward the "Big Bend" area of Florida by Thursday as a tropical storm. It was expected to be a tropical storm when it passes just north of the Azores overnight Friday.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, a tropical depression was about 200 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras' beaches and moving to the northeast.

A pair of tropical systems that should bring heavy rain to the North Carolina coast probably won't have a major impact on local weather this week. There will also be a high risk of rip currents along the Ocracoke beaches today and the risky conditions are likely to continue through Wednesday. The system is likely to become a named tropical storm tonight or Tuesday morning. Maximum winds were 35 miles per hour, just shy of the 39 miles per hour wind required to be considered a tropical storm. The Miami-based center said that system is also expected to become a tropical storm by sometime Tuesday.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to eventually turn to the north and then northeast in coming days amid predictions it could drop heavy rains over northern Florida.

The storm is expected to produce a total of 1 to 3 inches of rain with isolated maximum amounts of 5 inches over far eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks.

Trump plans detailed immigration talk as questions remain
Clinton has danced around the issue, particularly since her views may not have been in line with Obama's. But none could address whether Trump still favored a deportation force .

As Tropical Depression 9, or TD 9 as it's often referred to as, moves deeper into the Gulf of Mexico environmental conditions will be a bit more favorable for strengthening. Maximum winds will be near 35 mph with higher gusts and gaining strength slowly during the next 48 hours.

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Hurricane Gaston as it was strengthening into a major hurricane, nearly 600 miles away from Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 15 miles (30 kilometers) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 kilometers).

Forecasters say Gaston should slow down during the next day or so and turn northward on Monday.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect for the storm, the NHC said.
