Webb solid in Cal debut, Bears beat Hawaii 51-31 Down Under

University of Hawai'i: SYDNEY, Australia (August 27, 2016) - In a historic matchup Down Under, the University of Hawai'i football team fell to the University of California, 51-31, in the opening game of the 2016 college football season at ANZ Stadium. And it technically will be tomorrow where Cal is playing. It's anything but the typical build up to college football game day for Cal and this week. It's a historic trip for the Rainbow Warriors who play outside the United States for the first time in school history. UH and Cal have met four previous times and the series is tied 2-2. UH has played at least one Pac-12 opponent each year since 2005 with a 6-11 record during that span.

Hawaii was without three key players for unspecified disciplinary reasons. Wide receivers coach Kefense Hynson is also an Oakland native. Long travel for Hawaii is expected even in scheduled league games and going to Sydney is an exciting experience but then going to MI and Arizona in consecutive weeks will take a toll on this team, and possibly the fan base as it is expected the Warriors will not win any of those games. Being able to gash Hawaii on the ground will be a huge difference maker in Cal's hopes to start the season 1-0. He's not going to be enough for Hawaii, who is now coached by former Rainbow Warrior quarterback Nick Rolovich.

Senior defensive tackle Kory Rasmussen leads a defense that has switched from a 3-4-to a 4-3. His first run from 2000-02 was hugely successful with an aggressive style that created havoc for opponents. That blew the score out to 34-14 at the half, and like that, the game was all but over.

Cal adds insult to injury on this Davis Webb rushing touchdown. are 20-point favorites, after most books opened the line at 21. After successive one-year scores under 930 in the two years before Dykes arrived on campus, the past three rates for the football program have been 969, 946 and 997 to lift the squad's four-year April average to 960 - its highest since 2008-09. They have the experience but they were not that great a year ago and Cal will exploit that.

It's winter Down Under, but at the tail end of summer here it's finally time for football, the season that matters most to bettors and Las Vegas sports books.

A tangible reason the offense will be better is that the running game that features a few good running backs and it starts with Paul Harris who was one of eight Mountain West running backs who had 1,132 yards and he is not even listed as the starter as Diocemy Saint Juste is listed as co-starter after sitting out past year.
