Woman with West Nile virus 1st case in Massachusetts in 2016

Three new human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in MS, bringing the total so far to eleven.

"This is peak season in MA for possible West Nile virus infection in humans", said DPH State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Catherine Brown.

Five virus-positive dead birds were found in Altadena, Monrovia, Temple City and Glendora.

While this is true for mosquitoes that commonly carry the West Nile virus, other types of mosquitoes that are more likely to carry Zika, dengue and chikungunya are active during the day, according to the CDC. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Officials warned that people over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of illness. "The virus seems to be here to stay".

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache and body ache and appear within three to 14 days of infection. Rarely, people develop a severe form of the illness that can include neck stiffness, disorientation, loss of consciousness, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Symptoms of West Nile virus are often mild, but can result in encephalitis or meningitis, health officials said.

According to the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District, West Nile virus activity was detected for the first time this year in Artesia, East Los Angeles, El Sereno, Elysian Valley, Hawaiian Gardens, Newhall and Signal Hill.
