Corbyn and Smith clash over Brexit, unity and anti-Semitism in BBC hustings

Last night Corbyn said: "When the election is over and if I am elected leader of the party, I hope the MPs will come together".

The PM ridiculed her opposite number's habit of asking his Twitter followers what to ask at Prime Minister's Questions, revealing to MPs she had chosen to take a look at the suggestions.

Mrs May sought to ridicule her Labour counterpart by arguing his party would "undermine" North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and weaken the UK's security if he became prime minister.

If the goal of the first few Prime Minister's Questions sessions that a new leader faces is to assert their authority, both over the Opposition and their new party, then Theresa May managed that today.

A poll from YouGov for The Times, of more 1,000 Labour members between 25 and 29 August, put Corbyn 24 points ahead of Smith (62% versus 38%).

May insisted house building has actually increased under the Conservative government.

Mr Corbyn ordered a review, carried out by Shami Chakrabarti, into racism earlier this year.

He pressed Mrs May to commit to "one-for-one" replacement.

However, Theresa May misjudged the mood and delivered a series of prepared jibes about Mr Corbyn's precarious position.

Turkish airstrikes kill 20 in Syria
There was no comment from USA officials about the escalation of fighting between the two sides-both of which are US allies. The Kurdish-led forces "must pull back to the east of the Euphrates".

"I would want to avoid us getting involved militarily by building up the diplomatic relationships and not isolate any country in Europe", he said.

Jeremy Corbyn will today launch his environment manifesto, pledging to set a target date to end fossil fuel extraction, ban fracking, make energy efficiency a national infrastructure priority, and source 65 per cent of power from renewables by 2030.

The head-to-head came just weeks before voting in the race closes, with the victor to be named on September 24.

The Daily Telegraph later unearthed footage of Mr Corbyn in 2014 calling for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to "give up, go home and go away" at a rally in Newport.

"We don't comment on staffing matters", a spokesman for the Labour leader told IBTimes UK.

She said changes are taking place to allow councils to tackle bad landlords, among other measures.

"That's why we're looking, changing the rules and ensuring the regulations are there".

"We will act to protect the future of our planet, with social justice at the heart of our environment policies" he is expected to say.

Corbyn called Smith's accusations unfair, and said that he, like Smith, had "opposed antisemitism all my life".
