Donald Trump blames 'lack of spirit' for racism during violent Charlotte protests

In an election year in which presidential candidates and supporting political action committees could spend upward of $2 billion on political advertising, local African American-owned media outlets across the country say they're getting few ad buys.

The Republican presidential nominee has been challenging Democratic-led city governments and urging poor minority voters to side with him over Hillary Clinton, citing decades of crumbling infrastructure and industrial flight that has left inner cities bereft of jobs and prone to violent crime. But her campaign unveiled plans to spend $30 million on digital advertising as she seeks to connect with young voters - including young African-Americans and Latinos - who increasingly get their news online instead of from live television.

Meanwhile, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory said he has initiated efforts to deploy the National Guard and Highway Patrol to assist local law enforcement in Charlotte.

Security and immigration remained in focus on the presidential campaign trail Tuesday because of the local terror attacks.

"There's a lack of spirit between the white and the black".

"Think of how many families these policies saved from the worst heartache possible", Trump said of Giuliani, who is now a top adviser and surrogate. "I mean, honestly, places like Afghanistan are safer than some of our inner cities".

Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns - 3rd Quarter Game Thread
WATCH OUT: Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs projects plenty of trickery from Jackson, Baltimore's quarterbacks coach in 2008-9. Baltimore showed a tremendous defensive effort in the win, holding the Bills to 160 total yards and only 65 rushing yards.

A day after the apprehension of suspected bomber Ahmad Khan Rahami, Trump made his remarks in Kenansville, North Carolina, and repeated familiar themes to crowds at multiple rallies across the swing state.

Clinton has made curbing gun violence and police brutality a central part of her candidacy. Controversial Trump surrogate pastor Mark Burns also preached there the Sunday before the Republican National Convention in July. The group includes the mothers of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, black victims of high-profile killings.

Asked Wednesday about the police shootings in Charlotte and Tulsa, Oklahoma, that have reignited the debate over race and policing in the country, Trump did not address the Charlotte incident but said he was "very, very troubled" by the shooting of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, in Tulsa on Friday night. "Go vote." He didn't need to say for whom.

But hours later he called for the expanded use of stop-and-frisk, a police tactic that a federal judge has ruled can be discriminatory against minorities.

As head of the executive branch, he has failed to come out strongly against the actions of some police officers (who also fall under the executive branch) at whose hands several Black men and women have been slain in recent years. Officers said Scott was armed and posed a threat. Street demonstrations continued into the early hours Thursday.

But, Trump ran into more controversy when the Washington Post reported that the billionaire converted $258,000 in donations to the Donald Trump Foundation to settle lawsuits against himself. Associated Press writers Catherine Lucey in Orlando, Florida, and Bill Barrow in Cleveland contributed to this report. "It does raise questions that a politician would be so dogmatic about protecting Second Amendment rights (to bear arms) yet rather cavalier about protecting the constitutional prohibition against illegal search and seizure", he told a news briefing.
