Honda Says Takata Air Bag Ruptured in Malaysia Crash, 1 Dead

Seoul, Sept28:South Korea said on Wednesday that 13 automakers will recall some 110,000 vehicles equipped with Takata Corp's (7312.T) defective air bags, the latest development in a long-running safety crisis involving the Japanese company.

Honda City vehicle owner in Johor had failed to replace his airbag despite a reminder being sent.

The vehicle was part of a product recall announced by Honda in June a year ago, that required the replacement of the Takata driver's front airbag, the company said in a statement.

Honda said it had confirmed with Malaysian police during an inspection that the Takata single stage driver's airbag inflator had ruptured in the crash, but said the official cause of death had not been determined.

Takata air-bag ruptures have been linked to 14 deaths and more than 100 injuries globally, leading to the largest automotive recall to date.

Auto makers around the world have recalled millions of vehicles that contain air bags whose inflater lacks a drying agent.

Last Thursday Mitsubishi Motors recalled 47,800 cars in Russian Federation to change their airbags made by Takata.

Previous deaths in Malaysia were reported in April in Sabah state and in Kedah state in May.

Honda recalled 147,894 vehicles in Malaysia in June to replace deadly front passenger airbag inflators - part of a global programme which will involve more than 50 million recalls. They involved Honda City cars.

Takata has said it's cooperating fully with a criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department.
