India reacts strongly to Sharif's speech at UN

Kashmir will be the focal point of Sharif's address to the UN General Assembly today.

Taking on the Pakistani leader over his doublespeak, Surjewala said, "Hafiz Saeed, Masood Azhar, Dawood (Ibrahim) operate in Pakistan under your tutelage yet Mr Sharif has audacity to speak on terrorism".

Addressing a press conference in New York, India's Minister of State for External Affairs, M. J. Akbar, strongly rebutted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's insidious statement at the UN General Assembly.

While Sharif was delivering his speech, there was very thin attendance in the hall.

"Pakistan is a terrorist state which channelises billions of dollars, much of it diverted from global aid, to raining, financing and supporting terrorist groups as militant proxies against its neighbours", Gambhir said on India's behalf. Talks are in the interest of both countries.

Insisting that peace and normalisation between Pakistan and India can not be achieved without a resolution of the Kashmir dispute, Sharif made a number of allegations with regard to the current unrest in the valley.

Glorifying Burhan Wani as a symbol of new "Kashmiri Intifada" that was led by the common Kashmiris, Nawaz Sharif demanded an "independent enquiry" into the "extrajudicial killings" in Kashmir.

Pakistan's Sharif says World Ignores South Asia Tension at its Peril

Sharif said the "indigenous uprising" in Kashmir has been met with "brutal repression by Indian soldiers" and would "only fortify the determination of Kashmiris to fight for their rights".

Retorting to Sharif's claim that India has been putting unacceptable conditions to Pakistan offer for bilateral dialogue, Swarup said: "PM Sharif at #UNGA says India poses unacceptable conditions to dialogue".

At a time when tensions are mounting between the neighbours, Sharif insisted that "confrontation should not be our destiny in South Asia". He added that Islamabad would fully support Kashmir's independence from India. "It (Pakistan) extends support to extremist groups, it suppresses minorities and women and denies basic human rights including through draconian laws", she said before adding that Pakistan lacked democracy. India's only condition is an end to terrorism. It was learnt that India would highlight the latest attack at Uri during the UNGA session to show that Pakistan has not kept its public commitment to stop terror. The statement said what Nepalese Prime Minister referred to during his interview with an Indian channel was about support of Government of Nepal in controlling Nepal-India cross-border criminal activities.

Sharif called on Wednesday for an independent inquiry into extra-judicial killings and a United Nations fact-finding mission to investigate what he termed "brutalities".

"Pakistan, whose nuclear proliferation record is marked by deception and deceit, (is) talking about restraint, renunciation and peace", Gambhir said.

"We will not allow externally sponsored terrorism and threats of destabilisation to cause turbulence in Pakistan", said Nawaz in a veiled reference to the reported Indian and Afghan covert actions in Pakistan.
