New York AG launches inquiry into Donald J. Trump Foundation

The probe will focus on several topics related to the GOP nominee's charity, including its 2013 $25,000 donation to Florida Attorney General Elizabeth Bondy's campaign after her office said it was considering legal action against Trump University. "And we have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety from that point of view".

The attorney-general has endorsed Mr Trump's chief opponent, Hillary Clinton, for president.

Trump's campaign has said the improper foundation check to support Bondi's re-election was the result of a series of clerical errors, and that the billionaire businessman had meant to support Bondi with personal funds.

The US Justice Department has been asked by Democrats in the House of Representatives to investigate the $25,000 donation to Pam Bondi.

"There were allegations that they had made contributions to political committees which is illegal, there had been allegations that they made contributions to charities that now say they've never received the money", he said.

Bondi, who now backs Trump's presidential bid, ultimately declined to bring charges against the billionaire's for-profit education company.

The has come at a time when there are reports that Trump has spent money from the charity, The Donald J. Trump Foundation, for his personal expenses.

On two occasions, the Trump Foundation purchased expensive souvenirs like a six-foot painting of Trump and a signed Tim Tebow helmet, which if kept for himself would violate IRS rules against using charitable funds to benefit private individuals. The timing of the Bondi donation was also questioned because it came as her office was looking into whether to join NY and several other states in litigation against Trump University, the candidate's for-profit business seminars that some former attendees complained were a scam.
