Shanked kick? ESPN Fantasy football app crashes on NFL's big day

Unfortunately for those who were using the ESPN fantasy football app to manage their teams, you can count Week 1 of the NFL season as a devastating loss. In October of past year, the company said it had 7.1 million unique users of its fantasy football app, and that number has surely grown since then.

At some point between 4 and 5 p.m., the site appeared to be functional.

At 11:01 a.m., the Twitter account of ESPN Fantasy Sports , "We are aware of the current technical difficulties". In an official statement, ESPN said, "We identified a backend data access issue and resolved as quickly as possible".

Football fans - specifically NFL fans - are freaking out Sunday afternoon because the Worldwide Leader is experiencing technical glitches.

Jimmy Garoppolo helps Patriots beat Cardinals 23-21
The Cardinals had a chance to win it but Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal with 41 seconds remaining. The Patriots won 23-21. "I thought it was bad initially but just gutted it out and was able to finish the game".

Nope, it's not just you - ESPN's fantasy football app and website are down. If you're a savvy fantasy football owner, though, you know that there are also some very important players that step up each week and go from unknown to being need-to-know for next week.

Fantasy football is a crapshoot. Fans typically check their fantasy team and scores every few minutes on Sunday (especially on the first day of the season), and now they have no idea how their teams are doing. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

ESPN, for the record, has acknowledged that it's having problems. It appears that ESPN's app crashed during the big day.

For what it's worth, Yahoo's fantasy operation is working just fine.
