Tanzania quake kills at least 11; president says many dead

DAR ES SALAAM Several people were killed when an quake measuring 5.7 hit northwest Tanzania on Saturday, the president's office said, with a local newspaper putting the death toll at 10.

According to authorities 192 were injured by the natural disaster in northern Tanzania.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake could be felt as far away as western Kenya and was unusually strong for the region. Damage caused to buildings, both commercial and residential, has also been documented through tweets sent out by people living in Bukoba. "Even the number of injuries is likely to go up".

Rescue workers have told the BBC that local hospitals are full and can not cope with the number of injured.
