The Pentagon has also warned that Islamic State fighters could use mustard gas to defend Mosul.

In July, the Pentagon announced that 560 more US troops would deploy to Iraq to transform Qayara air base, west of the city of Qayara and south of Mosul, into a staging hub for the final assault. "The coalition will continue to increase the pressure on ISIL in Mosul and wherever it seeks refuge in Iraq", Carter said in a statement.
