US, Afghans investigating if airstrike hit civilians

A suspected US drone strike against Islamic State in Afghanistan killed at least 21 people on Wednesday, a lot of them militants but possibly including some civilians, Afghan officials said.

The U.S. military confirmed it had struck the Achin district of Nangarhar province, which is partly under the control of Islamic State extremists, as part of its counterterrorism mission in Afghanistan.

United States air strike kills 18 in Afghanistan.

He added that the US military in Afghanistan "takes all allegations of civilian casualties very seriously".

"We sent a commission to investigate whether civilians were killed in the attack", he said.

According to Shinwari, 12 more people were also wounded, including the tribal leader.

Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal, the spokesman for the provincial police chief, said that the airstrike had targeted Islamic State group loyalists. Six IS fighters were also killed, he added.

FDA approves lower-cost alternative to biotech drug Humira
The company did not disclose its plans to launch the drug or the prices it intends to put up in the Friday released issue. In July , an FDA panel recommended the drug for approval - so marketing approval was seen as a formality.

"U.S. Forces - Afghanistan takes all allegations of civilian casualties very seriously", said Brigadier General Charles Cleveland.

This is not the first time that U.S. forces have been accused of killing civilians during strikes against militants.

There was no information on whether it was an attack by a drone or a piloted aircraft.

A U.S. air strike killed eight Afghan policemen earlier this month in the southern province of Uruzgan in the first apparent "friendly fire" incident since American forces were given greater powers to strike at insurgents in June.

But the effort has largely failed in the face of violent challenges posed by the rival Afghan Taliban, a concerted campaign of US counterterrorism strikes as well as anti-IS Afghan security operations.

The new authority gave the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops greater latitude to order air strikes in support of Afghan troops.
