US Open champ Kerber replaces Williams at No. 1 in rankings

Serena Williams made it to the first three grand slam finals of the season, winning a seventh Wimbledon title before losing in the semifinals here.

"When I was a kid I was always dreaming to one day be the number one player in the world, to win grand slams", said Kerber, who hadn't won one of the four major tournaments before this year.

Kerber was at her counterpunching best and picked her spots to be aggressive against the powerful Pliskova, who wilted late in the third under hot, humid conditions. It also put Pliskova into the finals of a Grand Slam for the first time ever, where Kerber, her incredible conditioning, and her defensive, decisive style of play were waiting.

Kerber recovered from a break down in the third set, pouncing on her wilting opponent with two breaks in the third set to end a compelling, high-quality battle of attrition that stretched for two hours and seven minutes.

Adding another title at Flushing Meadows has given her further belief in her game. She did a lot for German tennis, as well.

Steffi Graf, who hails from Germany but is now settled in the USA, continues to hold the record for the highest number of singles Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, across both genders, with 22 majors to her name. "Actually just incredible. When I was a kid I was always dreaming to be the number one player in the world and win grand slams and today is the day I won my second grand slam here, especially in NY".

German tennis player Angelique Kerber said on Tuesday in Munich, after winning the US Open, that she wants to remain on top of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings as long as possible. Having won the Australian Open title earlier this year and after finishing runner-up at Wimbledon and the Rio Olympics, the German sealed the World no 1 spot with her triumph in NY.

Pliskova, who survived a match point en route to a fourth-round victory over Venus Williams, was almost betrayed by her nerves as up 3-0 in the tiebreaker she produced three errors, including a double fault.

Kerber's loss of the second set was the first time the entire championship that she had dropped a set.

In fact, Pliskova arguably played better tennis for much of the final.

"I think I'm ready to have this pressure on my shoulders", Kerber said.

US Open victor Angelique Kerber poses after a news conference at the airport hotel in Munich, Germany September 13, 2016. "I'd like to congratulate you on everything you have done", said Wawrinka who has now won his last 11 finals. "I told myself, 'OK, I will try to enjoy it now.' And not going out there with the pressure, with the expectations that everybody say, 'OK, now you have to win every tournament'". "But exactly what it will be I do not know yet". And after frittering away her first four break points, she converted her fifth with a lob-volley victor that curled over Kerber and alit right by the baseline.

"Stan, you absolutely deserved to win".
