Not just a thriller, 'Girl on the Train' explores women's struggles

I'm glad my first experience with Ferguson was her incredible turn in "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" because she's an absolute blank slate here. The longer "" goes, the more it peels back layers upon layers of Rachel's dysfunction. But is Rachel really capable of murder? "I am immensely proud of the work we did in this film".

Blimey, if you're a woman it's surely enough to make you reach for the bottle in despair. You won't come closer to the secret heart of the genre than that. She is just such an enigma.

Let me start by saying that anyone who doubted Emily Blunt ever, was mistaken. "I think I frightened my own children". It had none of Gone Girl's literary flair or smarts but good films can be made from bad books (see Jaws, The Godfather etc.), although it certainly isn't a given. It's the same setup: Someone becomes entangled in a disappearance mystery, probably more involved than they should and there are consequences for that. The Girl On The Train never establishes anything, and so it's just this... big knot of stuff. In place of bloated, boozy Rachel the picture has the lithe and attractive Emily Blunt, the possessor of movie star looks that no amount of dark shadows painted under her eyes can diminish. So were you able to really develop her backstory with Tate off-screen?

The two are remarkably different stories, but they both faced the same major challenge:how to tell a story when viewers can't trust the narrator. "Also, avoiding cliches with the character was of great interest to me, creating shades for Megan". It makes sense that Hawkins's novel has been adapted by Erin Cressida Wilson, who penned the empathetic kink of "Secretary" (2002), among other provocations. Blunt, one of the best actresses around and yet also consistently underrated, performs the hell out of the part, earning your emotional engagement by remaining rooted to the painful past at the center of her character even when she's forced to launch into the sort of hysterics that might have overwhelmed a lesser talent. Life and Lifetime changed a lot about pop fiction since then.

Oh gosh! I think it was barely made by a studio a year ago. There's a standard that women are set to, to try to keep everybody comfortable. "I never give a crap whether the character is going to be likable or not". As for what to expect from the latest addition to the crime fascination family?

Well, thank you so much, and I hope you can get home and feel better. You, "The Girl on the Train", are no "Gone Girl".
