Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe offers no apology during Pearl Harbour visit

President Barack Obama said the "historic gesture" from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe showed "that even the deepest wounds of war can give way to friendship and lasting peace".

US President Barack Obama (L) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe place wreaths at the USS Arizona Memorial on December 27, 2016 at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Pointing out that the main Asian battlefield of the World Anti-Fascist War was in China, Hua said that Japan "could not turn the page of history" without reconciliation with Asian victim countries including China.

At the time of the attack and over the years, some citizens in Japan described the Pearl Harbor attack as retaliation for a USA oil embargo on their energy-starved country.

The Japanese leader does not plan to apologise for the 1941 attack but to console the souls of those who died in the war, his aides said this month.

"They were doing what they were supposed to do, and we were doing what we were supposed to do", Mr. Rodrigues said before Abe's visit.

Both leaders hailed their nation's efforts to reconcile after the war, saying it shows how bitter enemies can become trusted allies.

"There is more to be won in peace than in war", Obama said.

Like Abe, Obama fell just short of apologizing for the attack, instead opting for a broader statement making clear his opposition to nuclear warfare.

"Ours is an alliance of hope that will lead us to the future", Abe said, speaking to World War II veterans after paying tribute at the Pearl Harbor memorial.

During the presidential campaign, Trump talked about changing trade policies worldwide and requiring Japan and other allies to pay more for security assistance.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman mocked Wenger for claiming Williams's 86th-minute victor stemmed from an erroneously awarded corner. Arsenal's inability to kill the game off against a rival was simply a case of déjà vu for supporters in the visiting enclosure.

Prime Minister Abe's special adviser Katsuyuki Kawai has met up with President Duterte early this month and discussed Japan's potential assistance.

Abe will be the first Japanese prime minister to visit the memorial, but his staff has made it clear the objective of the trip is not to apologize for the attack that launched the USA into World War II.

The surprise attack on the unsuspecting USA fleet at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, dragged a reluctant US into World War II.

It came six months after Mr. Obama paid a similar visit to Hiroshima, Japan, where he became the first sitting US president to see the site of the nuclear bomb attack by the USA that helped to force Japan's surrender in 1945.

"If Japan really wants to reconcile over historical issues, Abe chose the wrong place".

On Tuesday, he'll be the first Japanese prime minister to visit the memorial that honors sailors and Marines killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Cale was one of three Pearl Harbor survivors at the event, all of them in their 90s.

Stronger Japan-US ties as demonstrated by Abe's visit are likely to be seen as a warning message to regional rival China.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Spindler (l.) briefs Japanese Abe on the agency's recovery operations at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency facility.

.

In reality, the path for war had been set months before as the U.S. laid down ultimatums to Japan to pull out of China in an intensifying struggle for domination in Asia.

He said, "as we often make the case with our own naval vessels sailing ... in those same waters, it's freedom of navigation". "I have no animosity at all towards them", he said.
