Putin says Russia, Turkey reach deal on Syria ceasefire

Air strikes targeted areas near Damascus as clashes erupted between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters on Friday, despite a nationwide truce that began at midnight. He did not name them.

Who will ensure the truce isn't broken?

Malahifji, who was not present at the talks, said rebels had agreed to three main points: one about the truce, one about how it would be monitored by Russian Federation and Turkey and one about a political process to begin after one month of ceasefire.

The Kremlin statement came after Moscow, Iran and Turkey said they were ready to broker a peace deal in the almost six-year-old Syrian war.

"Turkey and Russian Federation strongly support and will jointly monitor the ceasefire/cessation of hostilities", the ministry said.

But not all groups operating in the country are part of the deal.

"But the whole world knows it is not possible for there to be a political transition with Assad, and we also all know that it is impossible for these people to unite around Assad".

Churkin said Russian Federation and Turkey have made clear they want other countries to participate in the Astana meetings, which he said Iran is also helping to arrange.

The government said it was not included in the deal, while some rebel groups said the hardcore Islamists were part of the agreement. No other details of the content of those documents have been released.

Heavy snowfall could hit parts of southeastern Sask. on Christmas, Boxing Day
Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph Thursday, becoming west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph Friday morning. Widespread snow is expected Friday afternoon in northwest Montana with 1 to 3 inches of valley accumulation north of I-90.

A senior rebel official said Moscow wanted a key rebel stronghold near the capital to be excluded from the ceasefire, a demand unacceptable to the rebels.

Mr. Putin said that Mr. Assad's government and the opposition would hold peace talks in Kazakhstan, but he did not announce a date. The United States has long said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must go.

The two countries back opposing sides in the conflict, which has raged for more than five years.

The poll now shows "jealously" as the most popular choice with 50 per cent of the vote, with "FCO on holiday" in second place with 28 per cent and "Can't believe" in third with 21 per cent.

In an interview with the state TV, just hours ahead of the commencement of the cease-fire, al-Moallem said the recently-reached nationwide cessation of hostilities in Syria is a real chance for ending the Syrian war and bringing an end to the bloodletting in the war-torn country.

Likewise, demands that troops from Hezbollah leave Syria may not sit well with Iran, another major supporter of Assad.

"The parties, with this understanding, committed to cease all armed, including aerial, attacks, and refrain from acquiring territory from one another/expanding the territories under their control at the expanse of one another". Assad and his allies can also turn their attention to ISIS, al-Nusra, which was previously linked to al-Qaeda, and other groups it deems as terrorists.

"We believe in Russian guarantees in ceasefire agreement, because Russia is our ally in fighting terrorism, but we do not trust Turkey", Muallem said.
