Marchers Say They're Going to Stay Active in Politics

Astoria resident Johanna Valentine, 29, proudly sported her "nasty women" shirt.

The march was organized primarily by women in opposition to President Donald Trump proposed policies on women's rights.

Organisers estimated the crowd had swelled to 500,000, with rides taken on the D.C. Metro expected to be higher than yesterday, when Metro counted just 193,000 rides taken by 11am, while trains and stations appeared to be far busier today (21 January). All of these women voted for Hillary Clinton, who's their peer, but they spoke less about her loss and more about their horror of Trump - the conversation has moved from a stolen election to the fear of the future.

In the history of the United States, there has never been a one-day protest that was this large. It was cordoned off and empty on Saturday as protesters gathered on the Mall.

It was the kickoff for what its leaders hoped could be a sustained campaign of protest in a polarized America, riven by an election that raised unsettling questions about USA values and barriers to women's ambitions. One D.C. official told the Associated Press that the massive turnout also forced organizers to nix and revise plans to march toward the White House. She told the crowd that people all over the world need to stand up against oppressive systems and governments, saying Saturday's march shares a similar mission with movements like Idle No More and Black Lives Matter. "But there are a lot of children out there and a lot of the signs are certainly inappropriate - I think maybe they should be a little more sensitive to some of their members".

She said: "I want to make sure their rights are not infringed on in these years coming up".

In Massachusetts, organizers anticipated as many as 80,000 participants for the sister march in Boston.

"I'm a Muslim woman and that is why I'm marching, because I want to empower all Muslim women", she said on a bus from Toronto.

The marchers were young and old, black and white, people of different religions and sexual orientation.

"There's definitely an influence creeping in - you see it in the Conservative leadership race right now", she said.

In Georgia, thousands are expected to participate in the women's march in downtown Atlanta this afternoon, according to ABC affiliate WSB-TV.
