However, a new poll released Tuesday showed a "fake news" report could also have aided Trump in his race for the White House against Clinton. Today, a presidential candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes to win the election.
The election with Hillary Clinton was much less the story of an insurgent candidate than one of what still feels like a freak accident to many, especially on the coasts.
All that winning the popular vote means is that Clinton won the east and west coast.
It is absurd to claim that this administration and this Congress enjoy enthusiastic popular support. Donald Trump won 2,641 counties, or 84 percent of the country. As Americans, I think we can do better next time. In 2000, the top 10 states visited by George Bush and Al Gore included Texas with 84 campaign stops, D.C. with 47, Pennsylvania 39, California 31, Florida, 30, MI 29, OH 21, Tennessee 21, NY 20 and Missouri 18. We suspect that is unlikely even in a solidly Democratic state such as California.
Therefore campaigns invest minimal resources into states they are either sure to win, or certain to lose. Instead, both parties would invest heavily in their respective strongholds.
That determination to resist the Obama agenda offended Democrats and thrilled Republicans. (Republicans netted three seats, but would have lost a net of two seats but for mid-decade gerrymandering in Texas.) Hillary Clinton loomed as the favorite for the party's 2008 presidential nomination, but it was clear to many pundits that the party needed someone else. "After the 1800 census, [the] free state of Pennsylvania had 10 percent more free persons than Virginia, but got 20 percent fewer electoral votes". Imagine if both campaigns, targeting the popular vote, invested significantly more resources in California and Texas, and that this resulted in an increase in turnout of five per cent. Six in ten Trump voters believe there were millions of illegal votes cast on election day. "If you ever want to govern again, you'd be wise to rediscover the virtue of all those forgotten working men and women in America's middle that Trump successfully courted, and turn your far Left party sharply back toward the center".
Trump has acknowledged the nation's division - when he was dubbed "President of the Divided States of America" on the cover of Time magazine, the real-estate mogul took issue with the label, calling it a "snarky" move by the editors. Something tells me Chelsea Clinton may be providing cartoonists more fodder in a future campaign, carrying on the Clinton family business.
There is another consideration, of course: money.
It is incontrovertible that Trump triumphed in the election; the Constitution unambiguously gives the presidency to the candidate with the most electoral votes. That would make the heartland "flyover" country even more than it is now. In an Economist/YouGov Poll conducted a few days after the election, just 2% of those who voted on Election Day said they saw any ineligible voters trying to cast a ballot (and there was nearly no difference in the proportion of Clinton supporters and Trump supporters saying this).
It seems to me one worth suffocating before it becomes just another "fact" in this Post-Truth world of his - and ours.

Tomlin may sit stars, but rest of Steelers to face Browns
