Theresa May British PM meets Trump with eye on Brexit future

Trump said he and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto mutually agreed to cancel a meeting planned for next week after the Mexican president said again that his country would not pay for the wall.

Ms. May, the leader of her country's Conservative Party who became prime minister in the aftermath of the Brexit vote, also vowed that the US could count on the U.K.to help fight Islamic terrorism and other threats around the globe.

Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said: "As we saw with protests around the world last weekend, there is widespread fear of an erosion for human rights in and by the USA".

May will be the first world leader to meet Trump, but has come under criticism for meeting with the President given his protectionist economic policies and an impending executive order to restore "black sites" for terror suspects.

After talking about the rise of China, she told them that "when others step up as we step back, it is bad for America, for Britain and the world".

A spokeswoman for the prime minister told reporters that there are "issues where we differ in approach and view with President Trump", but also said that a close relationship with Trump would allow those differences to be approached to "frankly and directly".

"When it comes to Russian Federation, as so often it is wise to turn to the example of President Reagan who, during negotiations with his opposite number Mikhail Gorbachev, used to abide by the adage "trust but verify", she said. "I believe a strong North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has been the bulwark of our defense in Europe".

"I believe it is in our national interest to do so". Mr Trump himself has fuelled such speculation by expressing the hope that May will become "my Maggie", a reference to the Ronald Reagan-Margaret Thatcher partnership that defined the heyday of the special relationship.

Earlier Thursday, Trump called federal whistle-blower Chelsea Manning an "ungrateful traitor", and slammed former President Barack Obama for releasing her from jail. On Sunday, the BBC's Andrew Marr asked Ms May whether she would raise some of the comments that Mr Trump had made about women and women's issues during the presidential campaign. It's all about Trump, and how America and the world is going to make Donald Trump GREAT!

President Donald Trump in Inaugural Speech Promises to Put 'America First'
Trump said in a Twitter post hours ahead of the swearing-in. "We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American ". Trump on Saturday defended the size of his crowd during the inauguration, accusing the media of lying about the estimates .

"From the conversations the prime minister has had with President Trump already, he has signalled his commitment to NATO", May's spokeswoman added.

But in the process of helping to lay the foundations for securing an important deal, Ms May does not want to be seen to be aligning herself with some of Mr Trump's policies and practices that are unpopular in Britain.

'The United Nations, in need of reform but vital still, has its foundations in the special relationship from the original declaration of St. James Palace to the declaration by united nations signed in Washington and drafted themselves by Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ' she said.

Mrs May is the first foreign head of government to address the annual Republican Congressmen's Retreat.

Mr Trump was reported to be preparing to order a policy review which could lead to the Central Intelligence Agency reinstating overseas "black sites" and reactivating an interrogation programme scrapped by Barack Obama in response to torture claims.

May is keen to start talks on a US-UK free trade agreement for when Britain leaves the European Union, which is also likely to mean leaving Europe's single market and its 500 million consumers.

May is scheduled to visit the White House on Friday, where she will meet with Trump and the two will give a joint press conference, the White House said.

At the same time, foreign companies are now warning May that they might have to relocate at least part of their United Kingdom operations to Europe if they do not have assurances that they will continue to enjoy free access to the European single market in a post-Brexit world.
