History in the making: UConn Huskies' 100-win streak

Graham Hays covers college sports for espnW, including softball and soccer.

The Connecticut women's basketball team can set an fantastic record tonight with a win over visiting SC.

There appears to be no promised land that the Connecticut's women's basketball team can not reach, no accomplishment capable of denying a program that's made a game out of making the improbable seem impossibly routine. Thus, it's no easy task to stack them up against one another.

Oh and ho-hum, they've won two national championships in a row during the streak, and four straight in total. But what's going on is not about the poor quality of the rest of women's basketball: SC is a terrific, watchable team; so is second-ranked Maryland; so is Baylor; so is a rising Texas.

For more on these wonderful women and their legendary coach, Geno Auriemma, I'm joined by USA Today's Christine Brennan. How do you explain their dominance?

It doesn't make sense that a basketball program that hadn't won 100 games in its history when Geno Auriemma arrived prior to the 1985-86 season has now won 100 games in a row.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Amazing, in and of itself.

The winning streak has lasted three years so far.

Williams has become that player on a UConn team that clearly revels in the challenge of living up to what's come before.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: A rebuilding year.

UNC Basketball: Tar Heels can't get road win at Duke
North Carolina drops to 21-5 with the loss and 9-3 in the ACC, putting them into a tie for first place with Florida State. The Blue Devils have shown improvement in their ball movement on offense during their current winning streak.

Earlier this week, Auriemma told reporters that a loss was inevitable - the only question was when.

espnW: As a woman president, of which there are very few at institutions of higher education, what does it mean to have your school's most successful athletic team be a women's program? . "I just think it is so much about what UConn has accomplished over the years and how each year it is a new group but we want the same thing, we all want to be better, we all want to come together".

Now that the Patriots have established without a doubt that they are THE dynasty of the Super Bowl era, let's pause to cheer another New England dynasty, University of CT women's basketball.

Actually, their domination of the AAC is a testament to Auriemma's coaching. And now, 100 straight wins. "No one really knew who was going to be "The Guy" or guys that would take over", Williams said. Shenneika Smith-"she hadn't made a three in weeks"-sank the winning shot".

Everyone knows the girl next door, their niece, their daughter.

Is there any practical need to hold the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament this year? "And I think it's the way the vets teach you how we do every drill, how we lift, how we work out". But you can't just coach on game days. He gets these great players. But then the Huskies did what they always do. They are great students, leaders, and are excellent citizens of the community. Yes, they often - in fact, some of them become. They've beaten them all, with wins over No. 2 Maryland on the road (the Terrapins' only loss) and against Florida State and Baylor, which both tied at No. 4 in the rankings this week.

It's good because.... WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE SPORT! It this good for women's basketball? I don't single this out from the extraordinary nature of the program more generally.

One the one hand, dynasties are fun. We just felt like we never wanted to lose, and losing thoughts did not enter our mind. "And you've got to remember that when you're the best, people are coming after you". As much as people hate the Yankees, people love the Yankees.

"Do I wish it was us?"

The main thing you notice about UConn is that the inconsequential possession doesn't exist for them. Where is the rivalry? What does it say about the competition?
