TriMet responds to false rumors of immigration raids on buses

Reports of immigration raids swept across Texas and the rest of the nation Friday, sparking protests and press conferences.

"The rash of these recent reports about ICE checkpoints and random sweeps and the like - it is all false, and it is definitely risky and irresponsible because reports like that create a panic, and they put communities and law enforcement at risk", he said. After running, the man and the immigrations officer ended up in a physical confrontation. He said the department was not asked by ICE to assist with any of the operations, which he said sometimes happens with certain "high-risk" operations.

California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon tweeted that ICE is "refusing to list how many were detained today or provide names". "I've not been made aware that anything is different".

"This operation that we conducted is on par with similar operations that were done in the past", Marin said.

ICE spokeswoman Adelina Pruneda told the Tribune that the agency doesn't conduct random sweeps and its enforcement actions are based on investigative leads. "By removing from the streets criminal aliens and other threats to the public, ICE helps improve public safety".

This week, the L.A. area, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and North and SC have all seen action from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, though the Post notes that a spokeswoman for them doesn't like the term "raids" and calls them "routine" and "targeted enforcement actions". The president's order also said enforcement priorities would include convicted criminals, immigrants who had been arrested for any criminal offense, those who committed fraud, and anyone who may have committed a crime.

"People called us. Attorneys called us, that this was happening, that this was not normal", said CHIRLA Executive Director Angelica Salas.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was hurt early this morning while trying to arrest a person in Northwest Austin. He said the arrests occurred in six of the seven counties of his agency's coverage area.

Reversing the Affordable Care Act , however, would affect nearly 20 million people now utilizing "Obamacare", including students. States would also be able to choose, however, to either accept part of the act's funding or to refuse all federal assistance.

And a city councilman from Austin, Texas, said he was concerned that ICE was making a public show of force in his city as retribution for being a sanctuary city. A minivan and a full-size van both appeared on the scene before the video ended.

Rather, the agency said, the L.A. action was part of regular surge operations and planning began before the executive order was issued.

"Stop scaring my community", said Santa Paula Police Chief Steven McLean, who described activist claims of a raid in his city as false. "I will continue to monitor this situation".

"This is clearly the first wave of attacks under the Trump administration, and we know that this is not going to be the only one", Jimenez said.

Roughly 2 million people were deported under President Obama.

A DHS official acknowledged that "given the broader range defined by Trump's executive order they also were sweeping up non-criminals in the vicinity who were found to be lacking documentation".

The Washington Post quoted one immigration official who was not authorized to speak publicly because of the sensitive nature of the operation as saying, "Big cities tend to have a lot of illegal immigrants".

About 11 a.m., Austin council member Greg Casar posted on Facebook that there's been a flurry of ICE activity in the last 24 hours. "Now I've got to go ahead and calm people's fears".
