Beijing pick Lam named next HK chief

The Chinese central government will have the final say in appointing Hong Kong's next leader, but with her widely-reported support from Beijing, Mrs Lam is virtually guaranteed the top job despite lagging behind Mr Tsang in popularity polls. She is seen as loyal to China's Communist leaders, although without the polarizing persona of the current leader, Leung Chun-ying.

"It will simply make governing Hong Kong much more hard in the next five years, and [is] not good for one country, two systems", he warned.

"She is viewed-and she said so herself-as C.Y. Leung's successor to continue his administration and policies", said Jason Y. Ng, a lawyer who wrote Umbrellas in Bloom, a chronicle of the mass democracy protests in 2014. Analysts say they are unlikely to win due to a lack of Chinese endorsement. She also needs to learn about the ideas and expectations from different social sectors in Hong Kong, while explaining to the public Beijing's concerns over sovereignty and state security.

Beppu: People in Hong Kong are divided into pro-and anti-Beijing, so how will Beijing react to it? She thanked all the other candidates and said her priority was "to heal the divide" and "unite our society to move forward".

The vote for chief executive comes at a sensitive time for Beijing.

The charges come a day after the Carrie Lam was elected to be the city's chief executive. Lam received 67 per cent of the vote and will become Hong Kong's first female leader and its fourth since British colonial control ended in 1997.

"There is a serious divide in Hong Kong, so why don't we start with the easier subjects and try to reach consensus" on how to tackle them, she said.

As an electoral committee member, Law said he cast a blank ballot in Sunday's vote, which he described as a "selection" rather than an election.

Mrs Lam, 59, who comes form a working-class background, joined the civil service in 1980 after graduating from the University of Hong Kong.

Counties lose population in latest US Census estimate
Job growth dropped off in the fall, leading Harvey to worry low unemployment was stifling the region's ability to grow. The majority of counties in IL saw declines, and overall population dropped by more than 37,500 from 2015 to 2016.

Lam's primary tasks will be healing divisions over Beijing's perceived encroachment on Hong Kong's affairs, and bolstering an economy vulnerable to China's slowdown and U.S. interest-rate increases.

Yoshioka: Beijing will demand for the stability of Hong Kong, no matter who wins.

Recent polls showed that Lam's popularity rating at 30%, trailing her major challenger, ex-financial chief John Tsang Chun-wah, by almost 20 percentage points.

"The central government has intervened again and again". The pan-democrats plan to side with a pro-Beijing underdog against the leading horse in the hopes of maximising the electoral competitiveness of the closed system. In that case, the logical conclusion would seem to be that Beijing should just declare the victor after the nomination process without Hong Kong going through a costly, time-consuming election.

Good morning. I have just had a very good meeting with Mrs Carrie Lam.

"She has been elected pretty much exclusively on the support of Beijing", said political scientist Ma Ngok. After she was declared the victor, protesters in front of the stage held up yellow umbrellas-a symbol of those who demand that the chief executive be chosen by the public.

Lam also avoided questions about Beijing's role in her victory.

This idea of being caught between worlds was neatly captured in a series of football games between Hong Kong and China in 2015, where the Hong Kong fans committed the unpardonable sin of booing the Chinese national anthem.
