March for Science to stand up for reason

The Columbia event is an official affiliate of the March for Science in Washington, D.C. and will include guest speakers talking about the role science plays in all aspects of life. It has been the people's day since 1970, when Sen. The proposal also calls for huge cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency - a 31 percent reduction in funding and layoffs of about 3,000 of the agency's 15,000-person staff, according to Nature, a weekly science journal.

The march, which coincides with Earth Day, is expected to take place in over 400 locations around the world, including marches scheduled to occur in all 50 states. "Conditions that have been challenged and threatened in a lot of ways for a number of years".

On the morning of 22 April, environmental group the Earth Day Network will co-host a teach-in and rally near the Washington Monument, followed by the march through the streets ending at the US Capitol.

Still others believe our greatest potential for economic growth-technological advances that increase productivity and support our high standard of living-depends on our ability to harness the results of scientific inquiry.

Not that it wasn't obvious in 1970. Evolution has been accepted as a acceptable scientific theory for over 100 years, and biology education depends on it.

Last year, the importance of Earth Day was recognized when 175 countries met in NY on April 22nd to sign the Paris Climate Agreement.

Scientists must communicate the impact of their work on people, communities and the planet in clear and precise language.

Playoff Preview: Warriors (1) - Trail Blazers…
It's this momentum that has made Lillard more confident the Blazers can take on anyone, including the league-leading Warriors. Championship teams have that one key contributor that isn't one of the superstars that steps up each season.

Nonetheless, the debate over NIH funding is further evidence of what has been clear for quite some time: Science is now political.

"My impression is that the current administration's attitude toward science and by that I mean President Trump, his appointees and many members of Congress, is that scientific facts that run counter to their personal beliefs are to be ignored and if possible, suppressed", Brown said.

The Hartford and New Haven events coincide with a national march on Washington. Andrew Lynn GS, who is part of the Department of Cognitive, Linguistic and Psychological Sciences, said he has no immediate concerns about the march and that he plans on attending it "without reservation". But the March for Science on Earth Day 2017 is our opportunity to commit to working together to combat efforts to silence science. It is critically important that we recognize and sustain the integrity of the scientific process as we contemplate and evaluate decisions about our future.

The March for Science RI "advocates for publicly funded scientific research and evidence-based policies that are unrestricted by partisan politics, in solidarity with all who value science worldwide", according to the mission statement on the march's website.

The theme of this year's event is environmental and climate literacy. "It must be free of political passion", as Joe Funderburk, an entomologist at the University of Florida, told The New York Times. It's an apt metaphor for the promise and power of science itself. "The people who own this (green) technology will end up owning the world just like in the Industrial Revolution".

Which brings us back to People's Day. See the People's World story about that demonstration here. Science shows us that wetlands help prevent flooding while providing a buffer between pollution and our drinking water sources. You can find out if people are marching near you HERE. The whole concept of climate scientists are in this for the money in one sense or another has always rung hollow to me just because there's so much more money to be made out there doing other things. Our book is a comprehensive look at the history and implications of climate science, the barriers to confronting the crisis and the many solutions required to resolve it.
