China's banking regulator to step up protection after cyber attack

The Department of Homeland Security began an "aggressive awareness campaign" to alert industry partners to the importance of installing the Microsoft patch shortly after it was released in March, an agency official working on the attack said. We increasingly are among the first responders to attacks on the internet.

The WannaCry ransomware program takes advantage of flaws in unpatched copies of some versions of Windows, especially Windows XP. It is targeting Microsoft's Windows operating systems, with hackers demanding payments of $300 to $600 (roughly Rs 19,000 and Rs 38,000) using Bitcoins.

The ransomware attack exploits a vulnerability in older Windows OS, including Windows 8, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

EternalBlue was made public on 14 April, and while Microsoft had fixed the problem a month prior to its leak, it appeared many high-profile targets had not updated their systems to stay secure.

But cyber security experts still think this victory is short lived.

"The problem is that there are a lot of Windows computers out there that either don't have automatic updates enabled or are so outdated that Microsoft has stopped providing security updates altogether", Vox said.

According to the FT, the cost of updating older Windows versions "went from $200 per device in 2014, when regular support for XP ended, to $400 the following year", while some clients were asked to pay heftier fees.

On Monday, a Microsoft spokesman declined to comment beyond Smith's post.

"We are strengthening our cyber security".

Last Friday, the company's British-based 22-year-old data breach research chief, Marcus Hutchins, created a "kill-switch", which security experts have widely hailed as the decisive step in halting the ransomware's rapid spread around the globe. Researchers at security firm CheckPoint examined WannaCrypt and said that the criminals behind it may not even be able to decrypt your files. More than 230,000 computers in over 150 countries have been affected, with Russia, Ukraine, India and Taiwan among the worst hit.

The impact of WannaCry ransomware attack has been limited to five or six isolated instances so far and there are no reports of any substantial disruption to India's IT backbone, the government said today.

In India, the attack affected Andhra Pradesh Police, four manufacturing companies, two retailers, to banks, the operations of a multinational corporations and the Chennai automation facility. The average ransom across all attacks known to security software provider Symantec in 2016 was $1,007.

WannaCry is the latest and one of the most notorious cyber-attacks has spread across the world in affecting possibly over 75000 computers across 99 Countries. But there are a few things that businesses can do to limit the damage it causes.

"Our key direction to you is to remember that we are in this with our customers - we are trusted advisers, counselors, and suppliers to them", he wrote.
