Watch F1 Monaco Grand Prix 2017 Race

Ferrari have not won around Monaco's tight and twisty streets since German great Michael Schumacher in 2001 but Vettel, rather than Raikkonen, could be the man to do it. "It's important that we keep pushing, improving the auto".

Since 2004, 10 of the 14 winners have started on the front of the grid and only Lewis Hamilton has won from the second row, having done so twice.

"Obviously, it's great", said a mumbling and taciturn Raikkonen afterwards, showing little emotion.

Hamilton failed to make it out of Q2 when he was deprived of a late clean lap in the dying seconds. Mercedes' hopes of finishing with points were kept alive by Russia GP victor Valtteri Bottas as the new recruit finished just 0.045s slower than Raikkonen.

The Finn returned to the track behind Jenson Button and Pascal Wehrlein which ultimately cost him crucial seconds once Vettel had made his stop. Ricciardo was able to hold position, though, soaking up the pressure applied. That's maybe what you like to do, you're on the fresher tyres sooner.

It was a much different story previous year, when Vettel was swearing and cursing on team radio, aiming expletives and broadsides at other drivers and even F1 officials.

The Finnish driver either stared ahead or straight down at his feet, only raising his head to answer several questions aimed at getting him to say he'd been hindered by his own team.

"We have a lot more thinking to do".

"You can see it's probably marginal differences that make it drop out of the window, and we just need to get on top of this".

Behind the two Ferraris came the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo with Hamilton's teammate Valterri Bottas's Merecedes in fourth. Renault's Jolyon Palmer finished 11th at Monaco ahead of the Force India drivers Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez, who could not manage to secure any points finishing 12th and 13th respectively.

Behind the top five, Carlos Sainz finished P6 for Toro Rosso, Hamilton P7 for Mercedes, P8 Romain Grosjean for Haas, Felipe Massa took P9 for Williams, and Kevin Magnussen the final points scorer in the second Haas.

In a race with plenty of sunshine and minimal overtaking, late crashes ensured the safety auto made its traditional Monaco appearance.

"We can't seem to combine the front and rear tyres' temperatures at the same time, so it takes two or three laps to build the temperature up all around, to get the balance right and to get the feeling for the auto".

It was a nasty moment for Wehrlein, whose Sauber turned on its side and slid against the barrier, trapping the German driver in his cockpit until officials came to his rescue.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel, his Ferrari teammate, also got away cleanly from second on the grid.

Then, after the safety auto came out again briefly with a handful of laps to go, Russian Daniil Kvyat became the latest to lose control of his vehicle in a frantic finish. This unfolded in much the same way as the Button/Wherlein incident, but not quite as dramatic. It's the first time the American team scored points for both drivers in the same race.
