Jaguar launches new E-Pace with world record-breaking barrel roll

With the E-Pace, Jaguar has fitted its own suspension to the shared platform including a version of the F-Pace's sophisticated five-link independent rear end, and adjustable dampers offering variations in ride comfort and handling stiffness come with the optional Adaptive Dynamics package.

In an attempt to one-up the larger F-Pace's loop-the-loop reveal, the E-Pace had a rather more horizontal task - performing a barrel roll, and breaking the a record in the process - the Guinness World Record for "Furthest Barrel Roll".

A younger brother to the already successful F-Pace, reviewed here, the new vehicle will be the first Jaguar not produced in the company's native England.

The all-wheel drive system (where spedified) instantaneously varies the level of torque between the front and rear axles, depending on traction levels, while high-performance models gain a new system with a rear-wheel drive bias.

Proportionally, the E-Pace takes a slightly different approach than its larger SUV sibling, though the same elongated hood is found here.

The back is arguably more closely related, as both cars have a tapered, swept-back roofline and pronounced haunches - although the E-Pace's rear lights lack the roundels of the F-Pace's.

A major highlight is the All Surface Progress Control system, which brings semi-autonomous technology to the off-roading realm, monitoring wheelslip and keeping the auto cruising steadily between 1.8 and 30km/h. The ZF-sourced gearbox also is available in the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel powerplant is available in 110kW, 132kW and 177kW outputs, while the pair of 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol turbo units deliver 183kW or 221kW.

Jaguar on Thursday took the wraps off its compact E-PACE, the performance brand's third SUV in two years. The Porsche Macan will likely be the E-Pace's biggest competitor, Jaguar officials say. Transmissions for the E-Pace will mostly be courtesy of a nine-speed automatic, but a six-speed manual option will be offered as well.

The 249PS model completes the 0-62mph sprint in seven seconds while the top 300PS version will achieve it in 6.4 seconds.

The boot is a good size at 484 litres and the load compartment's one of the widest in its class at 1057mm between the wheel arches.

A choice of two Meridian sound systems will also be on offer. Jaguar says the tailpipes - sprouting from within the rear valance - are inspired by jet engines, while the bold front grille is 3D-chamfered.

In terms of dimensions, the E-Pace measures up well with any of its German adversaries.

Speaking of brakes, the E-Pace will used brake-induced torque vectoring to balance the distribution of that force among all four wheels during cornering, which improves grip and steering control while reducing understeer and enhancing driver confidence. The E-Pace will get Jaguar's latest active safety kit that will enable to E-Pace to automatically stop in the city or warn the driver of approaching traffic when pulling out of a tight junction with limited visibility.

It will be the first Jaguar manufactured outside of England - produced alongside its corporate cousin, Range Rover, in China, Austria and a new plant in Slovakia.

Priced from £28,500, the E-Pace joins the 2017 World Car of the Year, the F-Pace, in Jaguar's SUV stable.
