After the attack on Las Ramblas, five people were shot dead by police in Cambrils, a popular seaside resort town south-west of Barcelona, after they drove into pedestrians.

Witness Ethan Spibey told Britain's Sky News: "All of sudden it was real chaos".

Two sources in direct contact with USA counterterrorism officials say the events in Spain over the last 24 hours make them fear that this is only the beginning of a series of ISIS attacks across Europe. A police vehicle was damaged and an officer was among the six people injured.

An American citizen was killed and another one was injured in the terror attacks in Spain, US officials have said.

However, the Basque separatist group ETA has carried out mostly small-scale attacks for decades, and the Spanish security forces have considerable experience in dealing with terrorism. People from 34 countries are among the injured in the Barcelona incident, the Catalan government reported.

The attacks have been condemned by many. Pope Francis said the attack is a "very grave offense to the Creator".

In a poignant moment, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, King Felipe VI and the president of Catalonia where both places are located held a minute of silence in Barcelona that was followed by applause and shouts of "not afraid".

TV footage from Barcelona showed emergency services helping people strewn across the pavement while armed police spread out in neighboring streets in the search for those responsible.
