Merkel makes final push as election looms

Merkel offered Germans "a combination of the experience of recent years, in which we have achieved plenty, and curiosity for the new" during the pair's only head-to-head debate of the campaign. The potential partners for a broader progressive project, the SPD and the Greens, have shown no interest in left-wing policies, instead orienting themselves towards the political center and presenting themselves not as representatives of the opposition, but as potential coalition partners for Angela Merkel, who will nearly certainly win the election. There is also a chance that the conservatives and the FDP could get just enough votes to form a black-yellow coalition.

Party leaders believe the few migrants who are allowed to remain have a duty to fully integrate into German society, emphasizing the primacy of the German language and traditional German culture. It's unprecedented in the post-World War II era for a far-right party to gain representation in the German Bundestag, the lower house of parliament. From the threat of collapse of the eurozone to pressures from Russian Federation and her handling of the refugee crisis, Mr Kornelius said Ms Merkel had been able "to close the ranks, keep Europe together and prevent it from slipping apart" and that she meant to do the same with Brexit.

The SPD's relationship with the CDU has been both its success and its downfall. But Schulz is still expected to win the second largest portion of the vote after the CDU/CSU alliance. Far from the confrontations we had come to witness in the U.S. and France in the last 12 months, Germany's election has failed to capture much investor attention.

The pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) look set to pass the 5 percent threshold for seats in parliament, which they failed to do in 2013, but the Greens are falling closer to the limit as support holds at 7 percent.

Eurozone Reform: Merkel knows that the Eurozone needs more integration for the euro to survive in the long term.

Schulz, whose party is trailing Merkel's conservatives by double digits, echoed that view.

How to Watch the German Election Results

As yet untested at a federal level, this combination rules in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. But months of wrangling is expected and, depending on numbers, Mrs Merkel may engineer the inclusion of the Greens in a "Jamaica" coalition. Both smaller parties have played down this option but may be lured by the prospect of power.

Yann-Sven Rittelmeyer, from the European Policy Centre (EPC), anoother think-tank in Brussels, said: "From a German point of view, it is hard to accept proposals as they are". They must be won back'. When new political actors walk into the scene, they often show innovative communication strategies, such as the widespread use of online channels, a highly engaged network of supporters, and a general inclination towards negative campaigning. Clashes are also likely on some aspects of energy policy and auto emissions regulation following the diesel scandal. And one is the Left Party, which is the successor of sorts to the East German Communists.

One such protester - who shouted "traitor" at Merkel on Saturday in her Baltic coast constituency Stralsund - said he was voting AfD because "the issues they raise relate to me".

Voters have consistently backed Ms Merkel in opinion polls. Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel and some commentators have likened the AfD to Hitler's Nazis. The FDP and the Left party, which calls for higher taxes on the rich and the dissolution of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, hold 9 percent each. It is being tested in the state of Berlin under SPD leadership and, with a Left premier, in the state of Thuringia.

Recently in Europe we have witnessed a steep rise in so-called populist parties, alongside with a significant wave of innovation in political communication, especially in times of electoral campaigning. Such a coalition would probably focus on boosting investment and tackling inequality and adopt a more Russia-friendly stance.

"To support the AfD publicly in Germany leads to social and economic ostracism".
