In St. Louis, only miles from Ferguson, state and city officials had braced for large-scale protests after the acquittal of the former police officer, Jason Stockley, in the death of Anthony Lamar Smith, a 24-year-old black man. A court documentsaid that Stockley and another police officer chased Smith, a drug suspect, in a auto at more than 80 miles per hour and that he was "going to kill this motherf--er, don't you know it" before instructing the driving officer to steer the auto into Smith's slowing vehicle.
Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun on Smith, as Stockley's DNA was found on the gun but Smith's was not. St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who said prosecutors didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Stockley murdered Smith, said the statement could be ambiguous.
Stockley shot Smith after Smith fled from Stockley and his partner, who were trying to arrest him for a suspected drug deal. The protesters stopped briefly at 14th Street and held their hands in the air. Gray was eventually helped to safety by another demonstrator.

As the chaos escalated, scores of police officers in riot gear pushed forward against the demonstrators just after 11 p.m. - about two hours after daytime protest organizers had congratulated their followers on keeping their demonstrations peaceful.
