Riot police break up St. Louis protest over officer's acquittal

In St. Louis, only miles from Ferguson, state and city officials had braced for large-scale protests after the acquittal of the former police officer, Jason Stockley, in the death of Anthony Lamar Smith, a 24-year-old black man. A court document said that Stockley and another police officer chased Smith, a drug suspect, in a auto at more than 80 miles per hour and that he was "going to kill this motherf--er, don't you know it" before instructing the driving officer to steer the auto into Smith's slowing vehicle.

Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun on Smith, as Stockley's DNA was found on the gun but Smith's was not. St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who said prosecutors didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Stockley murdered Smith, said the statement could be ambiguous.

Stockley shot Smith after Smith fled from Stockley and his partner, who were trying to arrest him for a suspected drug deal. The protesters stopped briefly at 14th Street and held their hands in the air. Gray was eventually helped to safety by another demonstrator.

A U2 concert scheduled for Saturday night in St. Louis was canceled due to protests stemming from the acquittal of former police officer Jason Stockley. As news of the outburst made its way across Twitter, those sympathetic to the protesters were appalled, while police-friendly users balked at the suggestion that SLMPD riot cops could have acted so unprofessionally. We will be nonviolent but we will not settle on peace. Several hundred chanting protesters marched to the house Friday night.

The crowd began to break windows of several businesses on Delmar.

Carson added that he was able to confirm this with three reporters, five civilians, and two police officers.

In all, 23 businesses were vandalized along with 5 police vehicles.

A USA civil rights group signalled Tuesday that it would sue the St Louis police department, as criticism mounted over the law enforcement response to days of violent protests.

Protest participants were united in their reason for demonstrating: to use Smith's death as a catalyst to raise awareness of the tenuous relationship between law enforcement and communities of color.

As the chaos escalated, scores of police officers in riot gear pushed forward against the demonstrators just after 11 p.m. - about two hours after daytime protest organizers had congratulated their followers on keeping their demonstrations peaceful. "But a group of agitators stayed behind, apparently intent on breaking windows and destroying property". All will be returned to duty soon.

"We have work to do here in the city", the St. Louis Mayor Krewson said.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating reports that one of its officers posted a meme on Facebook that referred to Black Lives Matter protesters as "domestic terrorists", according to a local newspaper. The news service says one officer suffered a leg injury and was hospitalized.

People are angry, so the protests will likely continue this week and maybe longer as demonstrators demand answers. They want answers. I would, too.

As it had on Friday and Saturday nights, the protest started peacefully but turned disorderly after dark. Don't let the few bad apples paint the entire bucket dirty.
