US govt shutdown begins after spending bill fails

The Democrats' negotiating stance is: Give us this amnesty, or we'll make the government shut down and blame you Republicans for it. Four Republicans voted against the bill while five Democrats broke rank to support it. "We are open to talking and resolving this".

On the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump taking the oath of office, Washington produced a result that the president and leaders from both major political parties claimed vociferously to oppose.

But the leading Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, said President Trump had turned down two bipartisan compromise deals and "did not press his party in Congress".

Schumer agreed that some progress had been made but said there were still a number of disagreements.

The government will shut down at midnight if a spending bill does not pass.

But during those shutdowns, no government employees were sent home without pay, known as being on furlough. Shutdowns can also rattle financial markets. Travel will remain largely untouched, with Air Traffic Controllers remaining on the job, along with TSA agents.

Until a deal is agreed upon, rafts of federal agencies across the USA will be unable to operate.

A bill to fund the federal government until 16 February did not receive the required 60 votes amid a bitter dispute over immigration and border security.

In fact, according to TIME, the 2013 shutdown cost the Federal government and the economy over $24 Billion.

'Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our risky Southern Border, ' wrote Trump. DACA, which protects roughly 700,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors from deportation, was the key sticking point for Democrats.

In return, Mr Schumer pointed the finger directly at Mr Trump. But the bill failed in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes. "Shutdown coming?" he said.

The New York Democrat said after a White House meeting Friday with Trump, he thought "in my heart" that senators could complete an agreement by evening. Republicans refused and neither side has been willing to back down.

"We have another six weeks to solve that problem".

The Senate is expected to resume talks on funding the government at noon. "We discussed all of the major outstanding issues".

Republicans have a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

The Senate failed to pass a cloture vote on a House-passed continuing resolution Friday, right before current government funding levels are set to expire. "I really think the pressure is on the president", he had said.

Even before the vote, Trump was pessimistic, tweeting, "Not looking good" and blaming the Democrats who he said actually wanted the shutdown "to help diminish the success" of the tax bill he and fellow Republicans pushed through last month.

Gottheimer broke with his party when he supported the House bill.
