US Treasury Department releases list naming 210 Russian 'political figures' and businesspeople

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday the release of the list was an unfriendly act, but Moscow did not now plan to retaliate. At the same time, the US move could help the Russian leader in his re-election bid in March.

Nicolas Dhuicq, the mayor of the French commune of Brienne-le-Chateau and a former member of the French National Assembly, also believes that the report targets United States allies, discouraging them from fostering ties with Russian Federation.

Trump criticized the sanctions law, which Congress passed past year with enough backing to override any presidential veto, and has seemed unenthusiastic about implementing it. They insist this is proof he's "soft" of Russian Federation.

New U.S. sanctions will follow the publication of a list of Russian billionaires and top Russian officials, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Tuesday.

Along with 114 Russian government officials and state-company chiefs, the names were compiled based on "objective criteria drawn from publicly available sources", Treasury said in the report. The Administration announced there would be no sanctions impositions at this time. "We were prepared to undertake retaliatory steps, and quite serious ones too, which would cut our relations to zero", he said.

A separate, classified annexe lists lower-ranking government officials or Russians worth less than a billion dollars.

"It's a threat, not a punch", wrote Gudkov on his Facebook page.

"What does this list means?"

No wonder he was so excited that he tossed the ball into the stands, nearly reaching the second level. I think that was the furthest I've thrown it in a game.

Medvedev said the publication of the report "poisons our ties", adding Russian Federation would respond if the U.S. moves to introduce sanctions against those on the list. "Americans are right to wonder why President Trump acts tough on our allies but won't stand up to Putin's hostile moves".

There is a classified annex to the report which may go into more detail about what Washington knows about the oligarchs' global holdings and ties to corrupt officials in Putin's Kremlin, but the public list looks like what it is: a list of famous Russians. Navalny wrote on Twitter. "They say they didn't like our broadcast", Shaveddinov quipped on social media, sharing a photograph of himself from the airport in which two policemen were clearly visible.

"There will be real problems for Nord Stream 2 [gas pipeline] because of Alexei Miller's inclusion on the treasury list".

Why, some asked, hadn't the Kremlin central bankers been included? It makes no distinction between those who owe their fortunes to close ties with the Kremlin and those who don't.

Konstantin von Eggert, a foreign affairs analyst and host on the independent station TV Rain, noted that the list had suddenly rendered the role of competing interest groups inside and outside the Kremlin irrelevant.

Russia's credit rating agency ACRA said the United States report had "not affected significantly the financial stability of our country".

"Everyone", argued von Eggert, "is now in the same boat".
