NRA sues Florida over gun bill, says age restriction is unconstitutional

On Wednesday, Nikolas Cruz was formally indicted on murder charges over the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb 14.

The legislation passed in the Florida House, with a vote of 67 to 50, after a narrow 20-18 passage in the state senate. It would also create a so-called guardian program that would let school employees and many teachers carry handguns if they go through law enforcement training and if the school district decides to participate in the program.

In Tallahassee, the students cited age restrictions and an assault weapons ban as their top priorities for the legislation.

Following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February, Florida lawmakers have signed into law a new bill that will serve as the first step towards gun law reform in the state.

"The hardest thing I've ever had to do as governor is try to find the words to console a parent who has lost their child", Scott said.

But many other measures fell by the wayside as a result including a bill that would have fully banned texting while driving.

Almost all purchases of firearms must undergo a waiting period no shorter than three days.

However, facing opposition from Scott and many residents in Parkland, the "guardian" program will exclude people who exclusively perform classroom duties, said local media reports. But teachers who have additional duties, such as drama or track coaches, would be eligible.

While standing with families of the victims from last month's shooting, Scott backed the bill as a way to prevent future massacres. "I'm going to be talking to the groups I care the most about right now because it impacted them so much ... the families". As the New Yorker describes it in an essay about the rise of the drama kids, that musical tackles the question of "what happens when neglectful adults fail to make the world safe or comprehensible for teenagers, and the onus that neglect puts on kids to beat their own path forward". The Broward County Sheriff's Office received about 71 incoming calls during the incident, while the Coral Springs Communications Center received around 86, three of which were transferred to the Broward County Sheriff's Office for the law enforcement response. "If I veto the funding for this program now, this funding can not be used for additional law enforcement officers this year". "So that's what I'm going to focus on", he said.
