Angela Merkel: Berlin Christmas market tragedy a "terror attack"

At least twelve people were killed and nearly 50 wounded when a truck tore through a Berlin Christmas market.

Police said they could not rule out the involvement of further suspects although they acknowledged the investigation was still in a preliminary phase.

"One of the victims was shot", said Karl Heinz Schroeter, interior minister of neighbouring Brandenburg state, without specifying whether this victim was the registered driver of the truck.

A manhunt is underway for a 24-year-old Tunisian, Anis Amri, in connection to the Christmas market attack in Berlin. The man is said to have links to a radical preacher who has been called the Islamic State group's "number one in Germany".

"Twelve people who were still among us yesterday, who were looking forward to Christmas, who had plans for the holidays, aren't among us anymore", she said in a nationally televised statement. At least 48 people were seriously injured.

Berlin police chief Klaus Kandt instructed his countrymen on Tuesday to be "particularly vigilant" as the suspected terrorist behind the attack could be armed and on the run, and the head of the federal criminal police office, Holger Münch, said Germany remained on "high alert".

However, they released him the next day, saying they did not have evidence tying him to the attack.

A truck rammed into a crowd of Christmas shoppers at a fair in downtown West Berlin, on Breitscheidplatz near Kurfurstendamm Street at around 8:20 p.m. on Monday.

Following the deadly Berlin terror attack on Monday evening, the Chancellor's leadership has been called into question.

Berlin's Christmas markets are open again, and Germany's interior minister has urged Germans to visit and "buy an angel".

Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller said on Wednesday that it was "good to see that Berliners aren't being intimidated".

However, police said they did not find anything. "I am relatively confident that we will perhaps tomorrow or in the near future be able to present a new suspect", Andre Schulz told a talk show on the ZDF public channel.

Germany has boosted security measures following the carnage, beefing up the police presence at train stations, airports and at its borders with Poland and France.

Merkel added: "We do not want to allow ourselves to be paralysed by terror, although, this might be hard in these hours but we will find the strength to continue living life as we want to live it in Germany, in freedom, and openness and together".
