North Carolina Senate defeats bid to repeal controversial 'bathroom bill'

The North Carolina state Senate has voted against a legislation that would repeal the controversial bathroom bill during a special legislative session called by Gov. "But Roy Cooper is not telling the truth about the legislature committing to call itself into session-we've always said that was Gov. McCrory's decision, and if he calls us back, we will be prepared to act".

Outgoing Republican Governor Pat McCrory, who lost by less than 10,000 votes to Cooper in November, agreed to call a special legislative session to vote on the repeal of HB2.

But why, and what went wrong?

That's because on Monday, after almost a year of controversy, Charlotte's city ordinance that legally permitted transgender men or women to use whichever bathroom they identify with was unanimously repealed. (Charlotte's ordinance was a main reason why Republicans had wanted to pass HB2 in the first place, because, among other things, HB2 prohibited other cities from creating similar nondiscrimination ordinances.) With the offer on the table, Charlotte took the next step. They left in "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" anti-discrimination requirements for state contractors. Council members have said that if that does not happen, the ordinance will not be taken back.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the repercussions of HB2 were felt immediately. "The only thing stopping them are those of us who continue to stand strong", he said.

Charlotte rescinded its ordinance on Monday as part of the proposed deal, but the state's General Assembly failed to pass a bill repealing HB2 on Wednesday. While yes, the new bill introduced to repeal HB2 does outright repeal the law, it also includes includes a "Six-Month Cooling-Off Period".

"Phil Berger and Tim Moore, the GOP legislative leaders, engaged in political antics instead of the business of our state", Sgro said, adding "because of that, North Carolina remains closed for business". He'd tweeted that repeal would mean cities "will be able to take actions now prohibited by HB2 to prevent discrimination" and that "Durham will stand with our trans brothers and sisters and... against discrimination and bigotry in all forms".

In response, Dr. Ada Fisher, an NAACP member and the state Republican Party's national committeewoman, said that if Cooper "is working to bring back events and jobs to North Carolina, he has a duty to condemn William Barber and the N.C chapter of the NAACP boycott in the strongest possible terms".

The general assembly did not repeal the bathroom bill.

The North Carolina Family Policy Council is warning against the repeal, however.

Alarmed the deal would fall through, the city council met again Wednesday morning and repealed all of their February ordinance.

Democrats were furious, saying the moratorium was a violation of the original deal, which was full repeal.

"Host cities were also required to complete a questionnaire outlining how they will protect participants and spectators from discrimination".

McCrory called Charlotte's "sudden reversal with little notice after the gubernatorial election" proof that opponents seized the issue for political gain.

The special session began on a shaky note for Charlotte. What a dishonest, disgraceful shame by Roy Cooper and Charlotte Democrats.

Election Day exit polls showed that 66 percent of North Carolina voters opposed HB2 while 29 percent supported it.

Sen. Andrew Brock, a Republican from Davie County, later compared Charlotte's action to the cartoon character Lucy repeatedly pulling the football away from Charlie Brown.

Charlotte officials defended their partial repeal of the local ordinance, claiming they removed the specific sections to which state lawmakers had objected.
