DeVos unqualified for Secretary of Education position

"Our Senate Democrats are in a fit because President Trump has nominated a nominee for U.S. Education Secretary who spent the last 30 years trying to help low-income parents have the same choices of good schools that wealthy people already have", said Sen.

"With those issues, I just felt it was very important that, if we agreed to it, to make a statement in opposition of it", Anderson said. During her confirmation hearing, I asked Mrs. DeVos whether all schools that receive taxpayer funding should be held equally accountable for outcomes, particularly because President Trump has proposed allocating $20 billion to private schools in a nationwide voucher program. Democrats also pushed DeVos about her desire to push for more access to charter, home and religious schools as Secretary of Education.

DeVos has spent almost 30 years as an education reformer, fighting to better the educational opportunities for low-income and at-risk children and is well known as a believer in the decentralization of education decisions to the family. "Students, parents and teachers deserve an Education Secretary whose commitment to public education and safe schools will not waver". The Calvin letter, which you can see in full here, with signatures, says that numerous signors share a Christian educational background with DeVos and that they have no doubt that DeVos is "among the best educated college graduates" in the United States. The program enables citizens and businesses to earn tax credits in return for making donations to private school choice charities.

Murray, who was re-elected to a fifth term in the U.S. Senate in November, said she continued to have ethical concerns about the finances of DeVos and Price.

Betsy DeVos Is a Threat to America's Children
She subscribes to one big idea: All children, regardless of zip code, have a right to a quality education. The Trump-DeVos agenda is created to undermine that mission and harm our students and public schools.

On Wednesday, educators across the country wore red in protest of the impending confirmation of DeVos, and used the hashtag #RedforEd.

"In the Senate, we got 45 votes for that [as an amendment to the Every Student Succeeds Act]". The DeVos donor group supported the president of the Heartland Institute, Joseph Bart, who commented, "Complete privatization of schooling might be desirable, but this objective is politically impossible for the time being". Her father was one of the founders of the Family Research Council, which believes homosexuality is unsafe and advocates for "conversion therapy", a cure to homosexuality. A billionaire and philanthropist, DeVos is known for her passionate advocacy for vouchers and other "school choice" campaigns. But the department failed to closely monitor which option the schools chose or whether they fully complied with its conditions.

Still, the delay in the confirmation vote does not signal any increased likelihood that DeVos won't be confirmed, according to some education policy experts. So did GOP senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), a former education secretary (under George H.W. Bush) who is pushing for a comprehensive states-rights approach to education.

Liberals liked Duncan's emphasis on early childhood education and equal opportunity for minority students but felt that he was sometimes too willing to blame teachers for failing schools.
