Pass or Fail? The Senate Will Soon Give DeVos Her Grade

DeVos, a billionaire businesswoman and lobbyist, has promised to resolve any possible conflicts of interests by distancing herself from the corporations with which she is associated, though hours after receiving DeVos' full ethics review, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions postponed the January 24 confirmation vote in order to fully review their findings.

Of all the swamp-dwellers who have been nominated for cabinet positions, Betsy DeVos, the nominee for education secretary, is one of the most alarming.

The request from committee Democrats came after DeVos, a billionaire from the Grand Rapids area, finalized her financial disclosure statement and signed an agreement with the Office of Government Ethics late last week explaining her intention to divest within 90 days from 102 companies and holdings that pose potential conflicts of interest.

Devos has advocated for school vouchers in the past which is government funding that goes towards a child's education outside of the public school system, but the debate really picked up steam today.

She acknowledged under questioning from Vermont Sen.

DeVos's opponents also fear that she'll impose her Christian beliefs on the country's education system but McCluskey points out that's the opposite of school choice.

Sen. Bernie Sanders was also present at the hearing. "This is not about politics, it should not be about partisanship - it should be about doing the work we were elected by our states to do to ask questions of nominees on behalf of the people we represent".

What can we expect from the new presidential Donald Trump family
She wore pink - the color associated with tomorrow's Women's March on Washington to protest Trump - underneath her white coat. For instance, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton also wore Ralph Lauren on Inauguration Day, and was highly visible.

As expected, she spoke up for school choice.

They are demonstrating to show their opposition to the nomination of DeVos.The first significant protest in Portland surrounding the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump is scheduled to take place Thursday afternoon, when hundreds of high-school students plan to walk out of school and gather at Pioneer Courthouse Square. But instead of answering his question, she told him she wanted to give him "context" about Detroit, to which he responded, "With respect, I'm not asking for a history of Detroit". In fact, when asked at her confirmation hearing whether she preferred using growth or proficiency to measure student achievement, she fumbled, apparently conflating the two very-different approaches.

[Bennet] cited a study that said charter schools across MI perform worse the traditional public schools do. Oversight is lax and DeVos herself has nevertheless fought legislation to stop failing charters from expanding. Mrs. DeVos has faced harsh criticism from Democrats in Congress and education groups off Capitol Hill, and the concerns have intensified since an underwhelming performance and her demonstrated gaps in education policy during the hearing. Sen.

She has no degree in education. She and her family have been major financial supporters of Republican candidates and conservative causes. When answering to the question, she said that it is an interesting question but nothing in this life is free anymore. DeVos is known for her philanthropic advocacy, status as a GOP megadonor, support of school vouchers, and her stance on common core. I love public education - traditional or charter - and the uninformed vision that has been cast for this work that matters so much is simply horrifying and unacceptable.

"DeVos' chosen principles likely mean she will be cautious about federal overreach and defer to the states", he said.

But the real choice must be made by state legislatures and local school boards. A strong believer in parents and communities to make the right choices for their kids, her leadership has helped empower countless families - especially those from minority and low-income backgrounds - with greater choice.
