Community health leaders discuss Affordable Care Act's fate

President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have promised to repeal and replace the law.

"We know how health insurance truly works, and what doesn't work", AHIP said in a December memo outlining its views. About 11.5 million people enrolled through the health insurance marketplace as of December 24. Trump's proposed Health and Human Services Secretary - House member Tom Price - and other Capitol Hill foes of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan to resurrect House Speaker Paul Ryan's 2011 plan for a Medicare voucher system and other proposals to restructure Medicaid, repeal the ACA, and privatize the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, for example, signed agreements with physicians and insurers to create accountable care organizations, in hopes of saving money in the long run.

Leaders of New Hampshire's community health centers are gathering to hear about how the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act would affect the state's residents, particularly the vulnerable populations they serve.

Anyone who signs up before the deadline expires Tuesday night is guaranteed insurance for the rest of the year, along with their tax subsidies.

"I think the GOP can do very little policy and statute-wise and come away with a political win", he said. Up to 184,000 people in the state would lose health insurance, and the state's fragile economy could falter with the loss of billions of dollars in federal funds. Those who failed to obtain or maintain coverage would be eligible for basic coverage but with higher premiums in state high-risk pools. Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party John Zody says this is the way to effect change. What happens next year though is still unclear.

ObamaCare going away but what is coming next?
The same wouldn't apply for people buying their own insurance, but they could get a tax deduction on the premiums they paid. A lot of Americans are concerned about their health insurance, especially with no clear direction for the future.

An estimated 20 million newly insured Americans rely on Obamacare for coverage.

Thompson, who made his remarks at a WisPolitics luncheon at The Madison Club downtown, said he has great faith and confidence in both Trump and Ryan to take advantage of the historic Republican majorities in Washington, D.C., and said it is paramount to pass reforms this year, ahead of the 2018 election season.

"If you can afford it, do it". Without this protection, people would be unable to obtain insurance coverage if they had conditions like being pregnant, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Organizers say sign-up numbers appear to be down slightly compared to previous year.

The letter stemmed from an abrupt halt late last week in broadcast advertising and social media outreach by HealthCare.gov, the federally run ACA marketplace serving three dozen states. As of the end of December, more than 300,000 people had signed up compared to in December 2015.
