The Donald Trump Phone Call That Sent Australian Media Into Overdrive

The Washington Post reporting the President had ripped into Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the phone at the weekend over a refugee swap deal, saying he described the call as "the worst so far" before cutting it short.

Leading Republican lawmaker John McCain was in damage control mode Thursday after a telephone call last weekend between close allies, USA and Australia, turned testy.

In another Twitter rant, President of the United States Donald Trump called the Obama administration's refugee deal with Australia, "dumb".

But Amir now believes it is "highly unlikely" that the U.S. will accept any refugees from Manus Island or Nauru, where there are still 372 people living in a regional processing centre, according to the latest Australian government statistics.

A Sydney resident looks at a newspaper headline about the testy exchange between Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mexican journalist Dolia Estevez, citing "confidential" U.S. and Mexican sources, said Trump made the threat during an hour-long phone call with President Enrique Pena Nieto on Friday. The source of the account is attributed as a "senior U.S. official".

Turnbull insisted today that relations between the diplomatic partners were strong despite reports that Trump had berated him.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that over a telephone conversation on Saturday, Trump blasted Turnbull over a refugee agreement.

Trump's ire was triggered by a vague agreement entered into with former president Barack Obama previous year to take in refugees Australia has parked on remote Pacific islands.

He also had three assists during an opening 20-minute explosive display that saw all nine Pacific skaters score at least once. My family was here to witness it, too, so they can believe me". "Mine turned out good", Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler said.

Last month, Turnbull suffered a major policy blow after Trump announced the withdrawal from 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, which Australia had touted as "a huge foundation stone" for the economy.

Rupert Murdoch's Australian broadsheet The Australian, however, pointed to Turnbull's silence on Trump's U.S.travel ban, calling it an "implicit criticism", which "left our most important ally swinging in the wind".

Journalist Michelle Grattan described the deal as "a big and damaging issue in the Australian-American partnership". That comes a week after a White House release mistakenly referred to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop as the "Australian Foreign Prime Minister".

White House spokesman Sean Spicer confirmed on Wednesday that Mr. Trump had agreed to honour the deal. "I received the assurance that I did [on the resettlement deal] from the president himself".

At nearly 11pm the same evening after the Washington Post report surfaced, Mr Trump took to twitter to vent his anger, saying he will review the "dumb deal" to take hundreds of Australian asylum seekers.

Spicer said all refugees presented to the United States would be subject to "extreme vetting" to ensure they do not pose security risks.

"We want to see the refugee deal happen", said Bill Shorten, the opposition leader.

But Spicer's comment was nearly immediately undermined when the ABC's Washington bureau was telephoned by a White House source insisting the agreement was still under consideration and the president had not made a final decision.

Australian Ambassador to the United States Joe Hockey had a "productive meeting" with White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and top strategist Steve Bannon on Thursday, a White House official said, adding the men had conveyed Trump's "deep admiration for the Australian people" during the meeting.
