Trump vows to treat DACA recipients with 'great heart'

Despite the fact that his attorneys said Ramirez had his DACA identification with him at the time, he was questioned further, fingerprinted, booked and taken to the Tacoma detention center.

Trump has indicated on several occasions that people who qualify for DACA would be excluded from his immigration crackdown.

His lawyers say this could be the first time under US President Donald Trump that a person covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, has been taken into immigration custody. He paid a fee to register with the government, underwent an extensive background check and was granted a work permit. "We are frustrated that he (Ramirez) remains in detention for even a single hour more, but DACA is still the law, it's still on the books".

According to the Justice Department, Ramirez's father gave permission for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, officers to enter his apartment. After making the arrest, they allegedly went back into the house and confronted Ramirez.

His attorneys argue Ramirez was detained unlawfully and pressured into making statements about gang affiliation by ICE officers once in custody. "Seattle stands with all people that consider this country their home".

ROSENBAUM: No. That's nonsense. His lawsuit says he recently moved from California to Washington to find a better job so he could provide for his 3-year-old son, a USA citizen.

Ramirez is legally allowed to be in the U.S. through the DACA program.

Democratic senator: We may flip another GOP vote on DeVos
Patty Murray of Washington , the ranking Democrat on the Health, Education and Labor Committee, said on the Senate floor Monday. Two of the 52 Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME , have said they'll vote against DeVos.

A Department of Homeland Security statement Wednesday said about 1,500 people had lost their DACA status since the start of the program, "due to a criminal conviction, gang affiliation, or a criminal conviction related to gang affiliation". In some of the cases, they're having DACA, and they're gang members, and they're drug dealers, too. Do you associate with gang members in any sort of serious way? Instead, the visible section shows only what followed those words "I have gang affiliation..."

Legal experts say that unless the Trump administration revokes the program, DACA recipients should still be protected.

At the detention center, it was determined he Ramirez Medina was a DACA recipient and did not have a criminal history. He has spent most of his life here. "In the case of Daniel they not only granted him status once, but renewed it again in 2016 and this type of action puts great pressure and causes much nervousness and anguish among the large community of [dreamers]", he emphasized. That is a solemn promise.

The judge also wanted to know if Ramirez is in deportation proceedings and whether the court can hold a detention hearing before the lawsuit is addressed.

Ramirez is the father of a 3-year-old son who lives with Ramirez's mother near Fresno. And I think whatever anyone thinks about immigration issues, there has to be a recognition that we're dealing with a 7-year-old who had no part in that.

Immigration lawyers, activists and those protected by the program have been waiting anxiously for any signs of what Trump might do since he took office last month. Mr Ramirez did not say these things because they are not true. I do have a big heart. But the document says one of the ICE agents replied: "It doesn't matter, because you weren't born in this country". Thousands of DACA Dreamers fear that President Trump will ignore the protections promised by that executive order. But Judge Donohue kicked the case to an immigration judge and said, "I'm not going to tell the immigration judge how to conduct his or her hearing, only that it should be completed within a week from today". Talk to your representatives as to what's going on.
