Bacon, Noles Advance With 66-60 Win Over FGCU

Thursday felt an terrible lot like another one for most of the night against Florida Gulf Coast.

Overcoming a sluggish first half, the Florida Gators pulled away from the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Thursday, 80-65, to advance to the round of 32 in the 2017 NCAA tournament.

Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton used every scholarship player during the March Madness opener. "Tomorrow I think our play will speak for itself", coach Jose Fernandez said.

Cromer scored 19 points and David Burrell had 11 for the Bucs.

With the game within single digits, the Eagles went on a scoring drought that seemed to put the nail in the coffin before a three by Christian Terrell brought the Eagles back within nine, 77-68 with 2:17 left to play in the second.

The victory sets up a second round matchup between the Seminoles and No. 11 seed Xavier on Saturday.

Florida started off hot getting out to a 14-6 lead with 4:40 gone off the clock behind a dunking and sharp shooting Devin Robinson who finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Jespersen, a junior forward from Denmark is averaging 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds.

And, finally, a little more Bacon. "I couldn't be more proud of my teammates for stepping up at that stage and just battling all game". He has been an outstanding representative of our program and Florida State University.

With Florida State, Florida, Virginia and Maryland playing in the same venue, the Amway Center has the potential to become Upset Central in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. The second time, FSU went up 66-60 after Bacon's shot, then got a 3-pointer from Xavier Rathan-Mayes and a transition dunk by freshman Jonathan Isaac (17 points, 10 rebounds) for a 71-60 lead for a much-needed cushion. The nadir came in 2014-15 when the Seminoles failed to make even an NIT appearance.

This is no longer a real game, it is now a dunk contest. He did not return.
