The Walking Dead Recap: Take the Guns, Leave the Cannoli

Maggie's leadership in Hilltop extends beyond military preparation. I love the way she responded when Negan's asked if Rick had put her up to the assassination attempt: "Rick?"

Fans have also been keen to share their excitement for the final, with one posting: "The Walking Dead finale is going to be insane next week, oh my". As they point out, many fans of The Walking Dead have suspected her as a traitor for some time. Their conversation doesn't exactly pass the Bechdel test, but at least Rosita has reframed things so we see how character was informed by Abraham, as opposed to existing exclusively as his supporting player.

Early on in the episode, one of Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) previously-nameless goons, David, snuck into Sasha's prison cell. The Oceanside community is not in the novels, so I'm curious if The Walking Dead writers will continue its storyline. However, it's all but confirmed that Sasha will kick the bucket next week. Negan uses his cool demeanor to sweet talk Sasha into thinking she will be safe but also implies that he's the boss and won't hesitate to kill her if he has to. Somehow I suspect Negan has inconsistently applied that particular rule.

Tara wrestled for a while with whether she should tell Rick about Oceanside on The Walking Dead. Despite how mad any of the Alexandrians may be at Dwight, if he is indeed there to help... well, they need all they can get. Oceanside rallied their forces against the Saviors once before, and were so thoroughly crushed that every man who once lived in the community is now dead. In the showdown, Rick convinces them and gains their trust when they take down a group of walkers (zombies). It made a decision to attempt excitement in having the Saviours visit the Hilltop once more, which while nice as we get to see Simon (Steven Ogg) who I like very much, it just feels like a repeat of something we've seen for what I believe is the third time.

Gregory wussed out, of course, and then needed her help when he was attacked by a walker.

The Final Four teams and game times are now set
The seventh-seeded Gamecocks used a 14-0 run to take a 29-15 lead over Baylor late in the first half in an East Region semifinal. They said goodbye with a resounding thud after going 0-fer from 3-point range in the second half of Sunday's 77-70 loss to SC .

In the trailer for the episode, Dwight and Sasha are both seen to be alive - though for how much longer?

The main focus of this Walking Dead episode was Rick and company getting the guns from Oceanside, which they do. Even if they seem like they're on the winning side, there are plenty of obstacles ahead.

"Get on your knees", Rick tells him at gunpoint. His whole spiel this season has been dominating and emasculating his male enemies and making glorified sex dolls out of the pretty women in his orbit, so hearing him decry sexual assault as monstrous felt hollow, and more than a little absurd. Because an episode this uneventful has to be the calm before one hell of a storm, right? Every single one of the vermin who follow him have been irredeemable (Dwight pending) due to their thug mentality or mindless killing. It takes ideas from across the entire season to their logical, inevitable conclusions, but does so in such a ham-fisted way that all you can do is sigh and wish for what things had gone differently. "I just want you to understand, we are not monsters".

We get off to a slow start.

Mixed in with these plots were also a few scenes at Hilltop, scenes that are clearly setting up Maggie (Lauren Cohan) as the new leader of the community while current leader Gregory (Xander Berkeley) falls from his throne. Tanya wants no part of it. Michonne has a chance to take a risky shot, but then spots some incoming walkers. Why would Sasha need a bag over her head to go from the Savior's headquarters to Alexandria, both locations that are known to her? After David apologizes, Negan stabs him in the throat, saying, "I don't accept your apology". After reluctantly taking him up on his offer, Negan lets it slip that a "little birdie" told him Rick is up to his old tricks. If they are not, and one outweighs the others, then probably it's time to take off the cowboy boots and leave them in the middle of the ring.
