3rd round at Masters a day of wasted chances for McIlroy

Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia finished the third round tied for the lead at 6 under after storming up the leaderboard on the back nine. His double-bogey 5 on the par-3 16th was his downfall.

After Round 1 on Thursday, it didn't look promising for American golf phenom Jordan Spieth to win his second Green Jacket in three tries. "I'm certainly looking for my first Masters and my first green jacket". Sergio Garcia, who started the round tied for first, was tied with Spieth halfway through the round.

"The course offers you a run around the par-fives", Rose told reporters. "That's all you want but really it starts on the back nine on Sunday", said Rose. "Tomorrow will be a tough day and I will need to play well", Garcia said when asked about the possibility of winning his first ever major title.

Rose lovingly patted Garcia's cheek before they embraced.

So channeling "The King", Spieth stepped up and made a swing so ideal that he was anxious his ball was going to end up beyond the green, but it settled nicely to set up a two-putt birdie.

Garcia said it was simple: his mind was free of his Augusta demons. "So it means a lot".

"I putted beautifully today", Scott said.

"I didn't take my medicine", said Spieth, who followed the golf ball he drowned with another that he used to overshoot the green. Here's everything you should know about the competitor! Spieth, though, started clawing back with a birdie on No. 16 to reframe his focus and, although he was 10 shots down he's just two back heading into the final round.

Not with six players within four shots of the lead, and eight more within five shots. Missing numerous birdie chances on the front nine, the Spaniard shot four birdies and two bogeys to maintain his spot at the top of the leaderboard. The only man to overcome such a margin and win a major was Harry Vardon, who was 11 back at the 1896 British Open.

Xi meeting watched for clues of future relationship
While he hopes China will cooperate on North Korea, he said if Beijing is not willing to help resolve the problem, "we will". White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has noted several "big problems" between the United States and China.

McIlroy was only six shots behind, but he had 10 players ahead of him - Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth, enough of them to make it hard to expect all of them to stumble on Sunday.

"I certainly know anything can happen on Sunday", said Spieth, referring to his collapse previous year.

This was the first major playoff for Rose while Garcia had lost his only prior major playoff to Ireland's Padraig Harrington in the 2007 Open.

Rose, the 36-year-old Englishman, shares the 54-hole lead at the Masters for the first time. He is two back in a tie for fourth with Ryan Moore, who came in at 69, and Charley Hoffman, who finished at 72. He'd also bogeyed No. 14, and played his final five holes in 3-over.

England's Lee Westwood, runner-up past year, shot 68 to finish at one under along with Belgian Thomas Pieters, the joint overnight leader who struggled to a scrappy 75. The chance to be aggressive all the way around - "you have to keep the gas pedal down and pretend you're not", Spieth said - could turn out to be liberating.

Spieth feels the same way.

Rallying in the third round, Spieth's Moving Day was in jeopardy of stalling as he found his drive on the pine straw to the right of the fairway, 230 yards away from the hole on the first of two par 5s on the second nine. "And if I can shoot 66 or 65, that's really possible out there, it'll give me a chance". Jordan and I are going out and having some fun.

Rose will tee off with Garcia in Sunday's final group, with the pair trying to fend off Rickie Fowler, who is alone in third place. It's a good place to be since the victor has come out of that group 21 of the past 26 years. And past year, he fired bookends of 69 and 71, the only problem being he filled those with rounds of 75-81.
