Ann Coulter's backers at UC Berkeley file lawsuit

Klein's statement also noted that UC Berkeley has hosted conservative speakers in the past and is working to schedule a "mutually agreeable" visit from Ann Coulter.

Mr. Sander's comment comes in stark contrast to former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who has said that Ms. Coulter's social commentary is not protected by the First Amendment.

The Vermont independent senator also added that he thought Coulter's views were "outrageous".

The Coulter lawsuit comes less than a week after a federal judge granted an injunction forcing Auburn University to let white nationalist Richard Spencer speak at a planned event. That decision to reschedule her speech, prompted the filing of the lawsuit.

"Yes, it was officially banned", said the political commentator and author.

" I am giving the speech", she said on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Do you think college campuses are suppressing the freedom of speech by conservative groups?

That was a reference to the violence that led UC Berkeley to cancel a scheduled February 1 appearance by another far-right speaker, Milo Yiannopoulos, at the student union.

The senator's comments came after UC-Berkeley cancelled Coulter's appearance last week, citing security concerns.

French citizens in Montreal express mixed reactions to early election results
Unpopular Socialist President Fran├žois Hollande did not run for re-election, unusual for an incumbent French leader. The candidate for the governing Socialists, Benoit Hamon, was a distant fifth going into the final weekend.

Young America's Foundation, BridgeCal and Berkeley College Republicans had invited Coulter to campus to speak on April 27.

Instead, the afternoon of May 2 was offered as an "appropriate, protectable venue" at the public university, but Coulter said she wasn't available on that date.

Berkeley has been criticized for canceling the two speakers despite the campus's historic role as the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s and 1970s.

She remarked, in that context, that the ACLU's absence at Berkeley was noteworthy.

"So I'm planning on speaking on the 27th as scheduled". Coulter realized this too and spoke a bit about it on Twitter.

"Berkeley used to be the cradle of free speech, and now it's just the cradle for f***ing babies", Maher said, according to the Blaze. This phenomena is occurring across the country for conservatives. But he said he anxious that a Coulter appearance on Sproul would result in violence and destruction.

Harmeet Dhillon, a lawyer for Berkeley College Republicans, was set to hold a news conference in San Francisco later in the day. "We don't have gates that we can close", Mogulof says. He faced backlash in 2014 at Berkeley when he was picked to be the winter commencement speaker.

"It's important that regardless of what the alt-right is doing on and off campus, that our side, the oppressed majority, continues to get organized", said Mukund Rathi, a first-year law student at the university and part of the International Socialist Organization.

As the panel for the town hall was all Republican, they all maintained a commitment to free speech.
