'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Didn't Impress Critics, Here's Why

It's been reported that Director James Gunn felt freer to make this film in his own mold and not because Marvel restricted him previously, but because his confidence in his sensibilities carrying a Marvel film are now proven. Opening in theaters on May 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7 and Thor: Ragnarok on November 3. James Gunn returns to write and direct the follow-up, which finds Chris Pratt's Star-Lord searching for his father, introduces a new member to the Guardians team in Pom Klementieff's Mantis, and brings about some new villainy courtesy of Elizabeth Debicki's character. When the Guardians finish with it, in style might I add, they, unfortunately, cause an intergalactic incident and so they have to flee toot sweet.

Evoking the weird wonderment of the original, as well as planting its feet in a more self-assured position, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is another movie marvel for a studio that continues to live up to its namesake.

Gamora (Zoe Saldana) must contend with Nebula (Karen Gillian), fellow daughter of Avengers baddie Thanos. Every time a character embarks on an arduous, back-story building monologue (which happens far too often), another character immediately sets it right back on track with a wonderfully self-aware remark.

After facing the creature, the Guardians head back to their current client to cash in. It's basically, "Our heroes are attacked and they run away in different directions and there's not really an ending". Those familiar with the Guardians comic book adventures know that Ego is not Star-Lord's father in the comics. But Gunn is clearly uninterested in what he should do and so this is actually a film about the group realising that, despite their huge differences, they function best as the universe's most dysfunctional family. But what's not so subtle is the theme of family.

"This is fake, there are no Batman characters awkwardly shoehorned into this movie", said Ujjwal Mohindra2. According to Bishop, multiple storylines lead to a "painfully awkward" film.

In a climate where superhero movies seem to be overwhelmingly dark and destructive, "Guardians" imbued the genre with a lightness and humor (not to mention a killer throwback soundtrack) that many fans were craving.

Edmundson's OT winner sends Allen, Blues past Wild 2-1
The Blues now lead the series 3-0, which means they could not only clinch this round of the playoffs but sweep it Wednesday. A 3-0 series lead against a team that many national pundits predicted would dispatch the Blues-it's a remarkable feat.

That would be the relationship between Ego and Star-Lord. He simply hangs out, utterly passive, and does whatever his dad says, while backstory and plot points are doled out around him and other characters try to give the movie a sense of momentum.

And, for the terrific first hour or so that seems to be the case with the movie as well.

This movie could have just been a father/son space opera. If the performance issues kept me frequently annoyed it's mostly because there's so much I like about Episode 1 of Guardians of the Galaxy. It's the same kind of exhausting stakes-raising that almost all Marvel movies rely on at this point, practically pummeling the audience into being wowed.

Terri Schwartz of IGN argues that Vol. 2 "isn't as wonderful a film as the first and suffers from some pacing issues", but it is still "a fun time with a lot of heart".

Ayesha is referring to Adam Warlock, one of the most powerful beings in Marvel comics.

But the confusion was cleared up as Guardians writer/director James Gunn confirmed on social media that Wonder Man was never actually meant to show up in the finished film anyway. With the first Guardians, Gunn and producer Kevin Feige (overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) turned the unknown Guardians of the Galaxy characters into household names.
