'Itty Bitty' guard big in Bulldogs lore after UConn shocker

At one point UConn trailed by 16, its greatest deficit during its winning streak.

It knocked the 11-time NCAA champion Huskies out of the tournament. Not only do they have great players, I mean, we talk about being attached all the time, chemistry. "I call my team the people's team. We've come through an incredibly tough region". That will be how it is and how it is done.

The giant slayer heard 'round the world grabbed the attention of millions late on a Friday night.

SC has weathered an early surge from crowd favorite Mississippi State to take an 18-14 lead after one quarter of the NCAA women's championship game Sunday night.

Back on the court, another Lady Bulldog guard, Dominique Dillingham, brought the ball over midcourt.

SC players celebrate after defeating Mississippi State 59-49 in the Southeastern Conference Tournament final March 5.

Twitter drenched criticism all over Vic Schaefer for not playing Morgan William in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 67-55 loss to SC in the national title game.

Wilson, who grew up in SC, blocked a shot on one end of the court and then hit a short jumper in the lane that started a 12-2 run to put the game away. "We work so hard during the season to get here and to finally be here it really is something special". The Schaefers are the first father-daughter combo in Final Four history. "When you combine that with their energy level seemed to be really good, I think that made for a bad recipe for our not being able to handle dribble-penetration". Actually, he's bigger than majority; Judge has two inches and 15 pounds on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. "Now we're 40 minutes from a championship". But Staley has never won an NCAA title, and now, as a head coach, she has SC on the brink. Each time, the Gamecocks held the Bulldogs in check offensively, allowing 61, 48 and 55 points. The two have been watching each other all season in film study and in the SEC standings.

The Huskies are 0-4 in NCAA Tournament overtime games.

"You can't go into the game thinking you can just do the same old things", SC head coach Dawn Staley said. "You've got to throw all of that out the door".

"We feel like we won it all when we won that game last night, but we know we didn't", William said. They know us better than anybody. The Gamecocks were also in their first appearance in the national finals. State defeated #15 seed Troy and #7 seed Depaul in the first and second rounds respectively. They all chose perennial powerhouse Baylor over the Bulldogs in the Elite Eight.

TAKING DOWN THE TOP SEEDS: Mississippi State is looking to be the third team in NCAA history to beat three No. 1 seeds.

The first meeting between the two teams was even as frustrating. SC was still adjusting to life without Coates in the second game.

The Bulldogs battled, but looked a step slower than the Gamecocks, and South Carolina's defense kept Mississippi State's offense in check.

Mississippi State has faced the Gamecocks twice this season, losing both matchups. They take on SC (32-4) in a rematch of the SEC Tournament championship game - this time for the national title. Coach Schaefer said he is looking forward to the matchup of the game and knows the championship will not be easily won to avoid a 3-0 sweep from SC in the season.

"This team's been really good about on to the next one", Schaefer said. Not only was UConn not dominating, they were getting outplayed. Here I am at the men's Final Four in Phoenix writing about the women's Final Four. That kind of led to some of the things we did differently.

Schaefer told his players that they didn't play their style of "Bulldog basketball" on this night. "We just had to play them one time, beat them one time". "It came down to one play in that ballgame".

In the locker room, the Bulldogs mourned the loss, the season's end.

The Gamecocks took away the championship trophy from the Bulldogs and, for that, the MSU team and the coaches as well as the fan base was heartbroken.

ESPN will handle the broadcast duties with programming scheduled to begin at 5 PM central. The national championship gives teams like Mississippi State a chance to redeem themselves and learn from their mistakes from the season.
