Russia Vetoes UN Draft Resolution on Alleged Gas Attack in Syria's Idlib

The U.S. attack raised tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Lavrov also said Russian Federation expects the take part in a meeting on Afghanistan this week.

The Trump administration on Tuesday revealed intelligence that it said proved Syrian forces had carried out the deadly chemical weapons attack in the northern Idlib province that led to the U.S. missile strike, the Washington Post reported.

Ahead of Wednesday's vote, US's UN envoy Nikki Haley declared that the United States was ready to work towards a diplomatic solution to end the six-year war in Syria.

But amid the recent mutual recriminations over Syria, Tillerson demanded that Russian Federation end its support of the Syrian regime following the April 4 chemical weapons attack in the town of Khan Shaykhun.

Trump and NATO's secretary general shared a chuckle when the US president told reporters he "asked about" whether members who have failed to contribute 2 percent of their GDP to the alliance will pay back those funds.

The men know each other well from Tillerson's days as Exxon Mobil CEO. But as for the broader relationship, it's not even clear yet whether President Trump and Putin might meet. Then-Secretary of State John Kerry touted the success of the agreement. But he said Wednesday the US doesn't have "firm information" to show that Russian forces were involved in the gas attack.

The pair told a news conference in Moscow that they had tried to seek common ground on a range of issues in a "frank" discussion.

The meeting agenda wasn't announced.

U.S. and Russian Federation have recently traded caustic accusations following a USA strike on a Syrian airbase in retaliation to a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town in Syria, blamed by Washington on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is backed by Russian Federation. Washington says it has no doubt about Assad's responsibility.

"Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all", Trump said flatly during a White House news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Soltenberg.

Tillerson is on a thus-far-futile mission to persuade Putin to abandon support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. "We believe it is of principal importance to prevent risks of a repeat of such steps in the future".

Tillerson conceded the two world powers had "sharp differences" that have obstructed cooperation but voiced optimism they could make progress.

Days after that attack, Trump ordered a cruise missile strike that targeted a Syrian air base - a strike that Russian Federation says violated global law. "No", Trump told Fox Business News in an interview that aired Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Turkey's health minister confirmed that post-mortem tests on the victims showed that the deadly nerve agent sarin had been used in the April 4 attack. Tillerson is considering the request, he said, "and we expect that Washington will have a constructive reaction".

Finally, the New York Times reports that Trump's rapidly changing positions on Syria, Russia, and a host of other global issues are giving leaders around the world "geopolitical whiplash". "But if I see them using gas...we have to do something".

Putin accused Assad's opponents of planning to stage chemical attacks to be blamed on Damascus in order to lure the United States deeper into the conflict.

Russian Federation also accused the United States of firing 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the base to divert attention from Iraq, where a March airstrike by the USA -led worldwide coalition killed about 150 civilians in Mosul.

President Donald Trump says Russian President Vladimir Putin is backing an "evil person" in Syria.

The president said he's "very impressed" with Xi, adding he thought he means well and wants to help. "I think it's very bad for mankind".

Of Assad, Trump added: "This is an animal".

Trust between Russia and the U.S. has degraded under the Trump administration, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated.
