Trump heads to Florida for meet with China's Xi

Xi Jinping meets Trump for the first time at his Florida resort of Mar-a-Lago for two days of meetings, with a range of hard points up for discussion-including North Korea, trade deals, and the South China Sea shipping access.

Xi will come to the summit with a team of players with decades of experience in negotiating with at least three successive American presidents, and a huge playbook brimming with research and intelligence on USA positions on trade, security and other key issues, according to Wilder and others. The Republic of China is the formal name of Taiwan's government, which was transplanted to the island amid the Chinese civil war in 1949.

In the wake of the missile test, US General Jack Keane said bombing North Korea "may be the only option left".

For one thing, the Trump administration remains short-handed.

"So I don't think that there's going to be any lack of clarity on what our "one China" policy is in the context of the meeting upcoming", she added.

Then there is the charge of currency manipulation, which Candidate Trump liked to beat China with on the campaign trail.

Experts like Prasad and Dollar say rather than wasting his time on currencies, Trump would be on firmer ground if he pressed Xi on other issues, such as doing more to open up China's vast economy to American companies.

Matt Pottinger, senior director for Asia at the National Security Council, called the secondary sanctions a "very much live" question for the summit, saying China has the ability to squeeze the North "in a way that no other single country can".

Trump and Xi, who oversee the world's two largest economies, are meeting for the first time and are set for a day of talks on Friday after having dinner Thursday with their wives at Trump's Mar-a-lago estate.

A long-standing option of pre-emptive strikes remains on the table, but despite the tougher recent USA talk, the internal review "de-emphasizes direct military action", the US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"China has great influence over North Korea".

China supplies North Korea with nearly all its fuel oil, imported foods, consumer goods, and the raw materials used to construct its weapons program. -China trade ties to pressure Beijing to do more to rein in its nuclear-armed neighbour North Korea.

Xi has already leveraged the Trump team's inexperience for diplomatic gain. A US official said on Thursday the White House and Pentagon were discussing military options.

What worries the protocol-conscious Chinese more than policy clashes is the risk that the unpredictable Trump could publicly embarrass Xi, after several foreign leaders experienced awkward moments with the new US president.

The last time the United States designated China a currency manipulator was from 1992 to 1994.

Security Council officials claimed they violate United Nations sanctions and "are significantly increasing tension in the region and beyond".

The meeting is likely to be strained between the formal Chinese President and the shoot-from-the-hip property mogul, who makes no secret he believes China's economic rise has been built on flouting global trade rules.

"I think trade is the incentive", Trump said.

While China eclipsed the United States as the world's top carbon polluter more than a decade ago, it is also now outpacing the transitioning to a cleaner energy portfolio. He said Trump's claim that climate change is a hoax might erode public support for taking action reducing the country's reliance on coal.

The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make USA manufacturing non-competitive. "They understand the politics of the business relationship".
